Those of you with dopplers at home...

So, when I first read about people buying dopplers to have at home I thought they were crazy. Well, call me crazy - because the idea has grown on me and now I want one! I've been looking around online and there seems to be quite a range. So just wondering which models you ladies have, how much you spent... and I guess if you have any general recommendations. I found a hospital grade one online for about $600 and that is WAY (way, way) more than I was thinking of spending.... TIA!!

  • sonoline B. I bought it with my first. I found the heartbeat around 9 weeks last time. I'm 7w4d and I haven't found it yet this time.

I am also a former labor and delivery nurse and I am really skilled at locating fetal heart tones. But I would encourage you to be wise about how much time you use it. I believe in everything in moderation (except maybe drugs and alcohol) in pregnancy. ;)

p.s. I paid 50-60 dollars for it, works great.

  • Sonoline B. Bought it a couple years ago from Amazon. Oh and aloe Vera gel works great with it.

How much time would you recommend using it? I was trying it out for like 15 minutes today.

I think thats probably the max I would do. If you hear the heartrate, I would turn it off pretty quickly. I just used it until I could feel the baby move and then I used it if it had been a long time between movements.

Once you are accustomed to using it, it should take you less than 1 minute to find the heartrate.

There are some studies that dopplers potentially heat up the amniotic fluid/fetus, which can be very detrimental. No one is really sure how much is too much.

  • I (like everyone else) have the Sonoline B. I bought it during my last pregnancy and started using it at 10 weeks, I found the heartbeat fairly easily the first time. I used it during that pregnancy once or twice a week for no more than five minutes each time. I have been very happy with that doppler.

  • I have the Sonoline B too. I found Alexander's HB at just over 10 weeks and used it almost every day for just a few seconds until I could feel him move. When he got bigger he would actually punch at it when I tried so I stopped.
