Getting back in Shape -- diastasis recti

I was in pretty good shape before I was pregnant and have lost all of my baby weight but still look like I'm about 4 months pregnant.

I was told by my dr, due to my 11 pound baby and narrow hip I got diastasis recti, separation is about 6-7 inches. She also said I will need to get them surgically fixed but should wait till after I'm done having kids because it will happen again?

Did any of you get diastasis recti with your pregnancy?? What has helped you shrink your tummy??

Re: Getting back in Shape -- diastasis recti

  • Hello! I am a Pre/Post Natal Exercise Specialist and did a lot of studying on diastasis recti after I developed it in my first pregnancy. There was hardly any information out there on it and how to prevent it, that I decided to create my own prevention program. That is what I have done and use it with my prenatal clients that come to my personal training studio. They are all very happy with the results!! My success lead me to create a prenatal workout DVD series. It is called Body by Trimester and is a 3-DVD set combo, made up of 9 total workouts. I spend a lot of attention on safe and effective abdominal toning to prevent diastasis and show what to do if you do have it. Although you are not pregnant anymore, you would still benefit from all the proper abdominal toning that I teach. My postnatal DVD will be out this spring. You can find out more at www.bodybytrimester.com. Enjoy and good luck!

    That's a TOS violation.

  • That's the biggest separation I've ever heard of. From what I've read, anything larger than a mild separation (1-2 finger widths) can't be corrected with exercise. I have a mild separation and I'd still consider surgical repair. I think your OB is right, it's going to need abdominoplasty. In the mean time, though, I'd ask for a physical therapy consult (be sure to find a women's health PT, because they're not all going to know what to do) to try to do what you can. Don't waste your money on gimmicks.

  • That is a big separation, I would look into Julie Tupler's program. I only learned about it while pregnant with my second baby. She has a DVD, book and a splint you should wear -- some only need to wear the splint 6 weeks, some a full year. I am already noticing a big difference. The website is

  • Thanks ladies... I will look into the websites? I just never know which ones to trust!

Glad to see you are seeing improvements with the Tupler technique, I will look more into that!

  • I have a seperation (I can put my fist in there) like you, OP. I had a very defined 6 pack prior to kids, and I didn't show at all with my oldest, until I tore at 7 months (I trained 9x wk for swimming). My doctor said the same thing, it's a surgical fix then physiotherapy. I'm probably going to have this all fixed along the same time (fingers crossed) as my foot, I injured it on a 7km hike at 34 weeks with my youngest. Confirmed broken pp and is healed, now shows as a bunion.

I'm back in the pool, doing walking (can't tolerate lots), stationary bike and stretching. I've been able to tighten my abs, but you can tell they don't look right. Good luck, if I knew a non-surgical way that worked that I hadn't tried, I'd pass it on.
