Can we talk p/t daycare?

I know it's probably next to impossible but I'm seriously considering looking in to a p/t option for H. (I'm a SAHM now) I feel like she would benefit being around other kids regularly. (I know there are moms groups where she could get socialization which is a potential option however it interferes with my other issue which is time....) Also now that she is awake more and extremely mobile and active during the day, I have no down time unless she's napping which is hit or miss. It's next to impossible to get medical appts or other professional type appts for one of my consulting jobs done with her, and DH can't always take off to watch her while I go.

But more importantly, my part time from home job that I do for my old employer in the spring and summer is actually gearing up earlier this year by about two months. Knowing how it worked last summer with a less mobile kid, I'm starting to think that unless I find someone to watch H I'm going to be burning the candle at both ends every single day since I won't be able to work at all when she's awake and I need to put in 4 hours a day.

I was thinking 2 days a week where she'd do full days. Is this a possible option, or am I insane for even dreaming up this type of situation? Where do I start looking to see what might be out there (in lower MoCo) and how much it will cost me?

  • Are you on the Silver Spring moms listserv? I know you're not technically in Silver Spring, but you're like 5 feet away from the line, so it shouldn't matter. see a lot of posts about pt nanny shares, babysitters and occasionally day cares.

  • I know Goddard lets you do full-time 2, 3, 4 times a week but starting at 18mo old. Is there one near you? You could possible find a family to split the time with - you do 2 full days and they do 3 full days.

    Or a nanny share?

No! Is it a yahoo group? Can you PM me the details?  I thought about nanny share or babysitters but then she is still missing the socialization aspect.

  • It's a yahoo group and it's awesome. I get a lot of good info from it.

  • My SIL is going to start my niece at part time at a kindercare - I think she's going to go 2 or 3 days a week from 9-3.
  • Around my neighborhood part time is definitely available with in home places.  With centers it may be rare, but I know it exists.  Good luck!  No way could I work four hours a day with a mobile kid around - you're doing the right thing.  In fact to me you'd be living our dream - one person working part time with part time daycare but still having time with kiddo.  Good for you!

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • My center allows 2-day/week part time, even in the infant classes, so it does exist.  But it does have to be the same two days every week.
  • I found in-homes to be pretty receptive to part-time. We send our LOs to in-home DCP just 3 days/week (MIL has them the other days).
  • I have the perfect, perfect, perfect solution for myself, and the provider is open to having more clients, but we're all the way in Arlington.  If you're interested, let me know and I can pass her email to you.  Basically, she is starting a daycare out of her home.  She is so wonderful with my daughter, she's only $10 per hour, I can use her as much or as little as I need, and her home has SO MUCH FUN stuff for the kids - a big playroom upstairs, lots of toys downstairs, a big backyard with a swing, and even a live chicken coop.  I realize it's far, though, so let me know if you're interested and I'll email you her info.

Thanks! I broached it with DH last night and I don't know he's convinced it's necessary, but I am going to keep working on him. I don't see how it's possible either!

Oh man. Yeah, Arlington is pretty far for me to go! I will put this in my back pocket if I get desperate though, thank you.

  • I'd call the LOCATE counselors so they can tailor a search for you for providers open to part time in your area.
