Trouble TTC

unexplained IF

I feel that most people on the board have another diagnosis.  My husband and I have unexplained IF.  Does anyone else have this diagnosis?  What do you think some root causes of unexplained could be?  TIA.

Re: unexplained IF

  • Ugh, I typed a response and it got eaten by thebump :(

I have no experience with unexplained IF but there are some who post here who do. I think that some eventually do get a dx and I hope you get answers soon!

  • not that I want you to start looking for reasons why, but you may consider checking out autoimmune issues.  Some REs are looking into this field to see if it might the cause of some of the unexplained IF and repeat early losses.  It is not widely accepted and my RE is one that doesn't

  • My DH and I are also in this category. I have Celiac disease and think this may play a part in it, but have gluten free for 3 years, so who knows.

  • My SIL has always been considered unexplained; they never could diagnosis it, but they did get her PG with IVF and she had little RJ about a month ago.  Don't worry too much that it's unexplained; the RE will put you on a protocol that has a pretty good chance of getting you PG regardless.  (Of course, have all the usual testing done by a good RE; my first tests were with my OB, and I was considered unexplained until I saw the RE.)

    This.

I just met with a new RE for a second opinion.  I have an elevated FSH (except this past time it was normal!) but no other issues.  This new RE believes that inflammation, circulatory issues, and even viral/infection issues are worth investigating.  He's running a whole panel of tests on me that my gyn and RE never suggested (looking into the above issues).  I think what he suggests makes sense.  PM me and I can give you his website if you are interested in reading more.

TTC#1 since July '10. DH: Borderline Morph. Me: age 33. Hypothyroidism.
    FSH #1: 10.9 (E2 80.7). FSH #2: 11.8 (E2 72.6). FSH #3: 9.1 (E2 36)
AMH: 2.6. AFC: ranges 9-21. HSG: clear. SHG: normal.
After 3 failed TI cycles, 3 failed IUI cycles, a couple of c/ps, we got our sticky baby on IUI #4 (first with injects).

  • H and I have Unexplained IF.  All tests have been "great" and "perfect" for both of us. My OB mentioned in passing, not as a dx, that she has a theory that women with bad allergies have an over active immune system that can make it harder.  My allergies are terrible and allergy shots have been recommended for me, but I haven't done them yet.  I have no idea if there is anything to it, but I guess it could make sense.
  • (Raises hand) My DH and I have unexplained IF as a dx as well. All testing has been good on both of our sides. We are both very healthy as far as autoimmune goes, no other diseases, allergies, etc. I have my yearly next month, we are scheduling an HSG. It's the only test I have not had done yet, I had to ask for it as my dr did not think that's what could be wrong. As long as the HSG is clear, we move on to Clomid, even though I ovulate on my own. Hopefully, the improved egg quality and/or more eggs will get us our BFP.

  • DH and I are "unexplained with a touch of MFI" according to the RE, plus I have some previous kidney issues which could have contributed. We'll be starting clomid/trigger/either TI or IUI for my next cycle.

My RE says that the vast majority of younger couples facing IF are unexplained. It sucks and it's a total mindfvck..."if just about everything is perfect, WHY are we not conceiving?!"

  • (raises hand). Our official diagnosis is "unexplained".
  • We're unexplained also. My LP is short but I have normal progesterone levels.  My RE doesn't believe in LPD, he said its a controversial diagnosis.  I ovulate on my own too but it's really late (like CD 35-41).  Even though we are unexplained I think I'm the problem, not DH.

My theory is that my eqq quality is poor due to late ovulation and that in turn triggers a short LP. I have no scientific basis for this theory, it's just what I think.  I really wonder why I ovulate so late on my own and if there will ever be a way to test for something like this and correct it in the future.

    Good luck!

ETA: Should also mention that I have a family history of thyroid problems although my RE tested me recently and I am fine.  It still makes me wonder if I have a borderline thyroid problem that could have something to do with it.
