Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Would you be worried

A friend of mine came over today who I don't see very often because of distance and work.  Her daughter is 19 months.  She is super tiny and just started walking but doesn't watlk all the time.  She only has like 2 words mom and dad.  She said she is babbling more now.  My DD was an early walker and talker so I guess I don't have much reference.  I would be a little worried.

Re: Would you be worried

  • What would you be worried about? My DD is advanced verbally and was saying a lot at 19 months but its also normal for most 19 month old LO's to not say that much. I wouldn't be worried. I also have a friend who's baby didn't start to walk until like 20 months.

  • My friend's daughter didn't walk until she was almost 2. Unless your friend has mentioned any concerns, I would let it be.

  • No I would not be worried.
  • Nope. Small doesn't mean "behind" or "delayed".
  • The lack of talking wouldn't worry me, but I have boys and that is totally normal for a boy.  I think girls normally are talking a lot more by 19 months.  We had a playdate with a 20 month old girl and she is talking in sentences already.  The lack of walking is what would worry me.  That's weird.

  • My son is 23 months and really only has a handful of words.  At 19 months he really had nothing except for mama, dada, hi and bye.

I would be concerned about the weight, though.  Have she spoken to her pedi, yet?

Many children don't walk until a few months after their first birthday so I'm sure the walking thing is fine.

  • If it was my kid, I'd be worried.  If it's someone else's kid then that is there business.  I would not mention it.

  • As a mom to a small, non-walking 16 month old, I would advise you to say nothing. We know our kid is small. We know other kids at this age are walking but that our kid isn't.

If she's anything like me, you're sick of people saying it. With all due respect, it's none of your business.

  • DS was an early walker but he doesn't have a lot of words. He's babbling a ton and communicates well, even if he's not using words to do it. I'm not worried, neither is our pedi.

  • I wouldn't unless the doctor said I should be.  They all develop at such different rates!

  • I was nyever planning on saying a word to her I agree that its not my business. I was just wondering if it was something normal or not.

  • Well, as someone who works in EI, those are definitely red flags. So like others mentioned, I would be worried if it were my child.
