Moving & Doctors - WWYD?

DH & I are planning on moving to a town 90 mins from our currently city.  We hope to move as soon as financially possible, it's not in stone but we are confident we are going to move between April-June.  I am currently in the process of getting Medi-Cal and set up with the OB who delivered DD.

My mother suggested that I should get set up with a Dr in our new town so I don't have to make the change.  I told her she's nut because I'd have to drive 90m each way plus $5 bridge toll vs. being up front with my OB at the first appt in 2 wks and having my records faxed when we move.

WWYD, stay local or make the drive?

Re: Moving & Doctors - WWYD?

  • My situation is similar, except we're moving across the country in June! I will have my doctor here for visits until then and also research who I want to use in NYC, then communicate with them before the move, schedule my first appointment, etc. and have my records sent ahead of time.

  • Stay local. We are hoping to move out of state or we might move 45 minutes away in a few months. I wil just transfer records when/if it is an issue.

Since you are not 100% sure when you will move, it makes sense to stay put. Imagine if you don't move and actually go into labor, you'd have a long haul to the doctor. Even those last few weeks when you have weekly appointments (if everything is normal). If you have issues, you might go more than once a week. That would really add up over time.

  • I would stay local just in case of an emergency  then just make the switch later. I would also of course go ahead and be researching OB's in the new area though. Good luck!

  • I'd stay local. You said it's not in stone and that you'll move when financially possible, which means there is a chance the move won't happen at all.

With my first pregnancy, I switched doctors due to insurance changes in the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy and everything was fine. I'd go ahead and research the doctors where you'll be moving so you have someone in mind. Up until 32 weeks, they just check your heart rate, blood pressure, and weight anyway, which definitely doesn't warrant a 90 minute drive.
