Sippy cup question...'cause I forgot ;-)

When did you start doing water in the sippy (and LO really drinking)?  I can't remember when Callum really started drinking water (it feels like he's always been a water guzzler!).  Eleanor never took a bottle (mama got overconfident and waited too long - whoops!) and really hasn't taken to the sippy.  She still nurses tons so I don't think she needs it but I wish she'd take just a bit since she's been a wee constipated since starting solids.

Callum took right to the bottle and the sippy...I think Eleanor just wants to be different ;-)

  • We offered around 6 months with meals, but I think Henry was probably 9 or 10 months before he really figured out how to take a drink.  Have you tried a regular cup?  We have had great success with using a small juice glass.

  • A just liked to chew on her sippy so we kind of bypassed that and when staight to a small plastic cup and she drinks maybe an ounce or so with each meal (although she still isn't that interested in solids)...perhaps a cup would work better!

  • DD1 never got much from a sippy cup but could guzzle like the best using a straw cup!  I introduced both at 4 months and the straw was instant success.

  • I started offering dd a sippy with her meals at 6 months. It took her maybe a week to actually catch on to the sippy but after that. From then on she drank water out of her sippy.

  • We tried introducing one around six months, but he didn't really take to it until 9 or 10 months I think. Definitely try different styles of cups, if you haven't already. DS still doesn't quite get the spout cups, but he loves the ones with straws. HTH! :)

  • Marije will rarely drink from a bottle but she loves to chew on and drink from her sippy cup (soft spout nuby one) the few times I offered a small cup she tooks sips from that too. But she loves her sippy cup and does drink fairly well from it now.

Can you believe how big our girls are getting?

  • I think I first offered L a sippy of water around 6 months, but he had trouble realizing he had to tip the cup back. I let him try a straw once, at probably 7 months, and he mastered it immediately. So we did a straw sippy of water at meal times.

  • LO hated bottles and we did a cup from the get-go. We would hold it, but somewhere around 10 months or so she would hold it herself. We only put a wee bit of water in it.

She will drink from a straw now, but still not a sippy.

  • I would try a regular cup. We have always used open cups at home - occasionally they get thrown but I just don't fill them much. I did use sippy cups out & about to cut down on mess though, but Ari never really liked them much. The best luck we had was a Thermos brand one that we got when he was maybe 9ish months. He still uses it.

How old was your LO when you started doing the sippy cup?
