When would you feel comfortable buying things for the baby?

When I found out, I bought a little sleeper just because it was fun. I figured it would no big $ loss if the pregnancy was not viable. For my holiday bonus I got a gift card in a large amount to any of the downtown shops in the suburb I work in. There's a really nice baby store and I want to blow the gift card on the baby but I don't know if I'm jumping the gun. It would be really sad if I got a nice baby carrier or something and my pregnancy didn't make it. Am I being too pessimistic?

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

Re: When would you feel comfortable buying things for the baby?

  • I've only purchased one thing for the baby-a pair of footie pajamas for my husband to unwrap on Christmas morning.

My husband bought me a diaper bag for Christmas but aside from that, we will probably wait until we are out of the first trimester to buy anything.

  • I feel good now, but I had my 3rd ultrasound today where I get to see them and their heartbeats, but I want to know the sexes before I start buying anything. I have so many nieces so I wont need girl clothes. I have been looking at cribs though on the JCPenney site and my husband and I are planning on colors to paint. Sleepers will be great to have.
  • We have received a few small gifts and I bought a onesie to give to DH, but that's the extent of it.  I think we'll probably wait until after the 2nd trimester for more purchases.  I personally would hold onto the gift card and use it at that baby store in a few months.  I'll be doing the same with a few gift cards I got for Christmas.

  • I'll probably order the furniture in February just since it usually takes two months to get in. Everything else will wait til after we know the gender. Then the shopping is ON!

  • Now! I am getting the stroller tomorrow, trying to find a crib and bedding set for a girl (since I know she is a she lol)- why not have fun, it takes forever to get everything, I would rather be prepared. And if anything happened, it is not like the baby ever used it so I do not think I would have a strong "bad" association. Like when I lost my daughter I only had to get rid of the things she wore. I still used her crib, carseat and any clothes she didn't wear- so I think look now for some deals!!
  • I feel comfortable now. We've had 2 ultrasounds both showing perfect growth and excellent heartbeats, so I'm keeping confident.

We're going to look (only look, not buy) strollers and carriers this weekend. We're trying to buy things over time so as not to take a huge chunk out of our savings at once.

  • I plan on having a shopping trip with my girlfriends once we all get our tax returns. Thats when we will start buying baby gear. More than likely it will be the bigger items that we want and then the rest will go onto our registry. Also, we won't buy any clothes or anything until we know the sex of our little blob. It should be fun!

  • If I see any really good deals I'll start buying (mainly for a double stroller and a carrier). We really don't have a whole lot to buy, we have everything from DS and all the big stuff is neutral.

Won't know if we need to buy clothes until the anatomy scan. If it's a boy we won't since DS is an August baby too and I have all of his stuff.

We will buy the crib/furniture once we get our 3rd bedroom cleared out and painted. Probably closer to 3rd tri.

  • I haven't bought anything. I even felt a little weird window shopping online the other night for cribs and such. I'm sure I'll feel more comfortable getting a few things after our first appt. We have quite a few spring consignments sales coming up in March, so I'm sure that's when the bulk of shopping will be done!
  • I bought a baby bullet with a gift card I got for Christmas, and I purchased material for the baby bedding because I had a very specific print that I loved and isn't available in many places (didn't want to have to end up ordering it later). Other than that I'm planning on waiting until March after we find out if it's a boy or a girl. Even then I'll probably wait to do much shopping until after my showers.

  • that is so awesome you already know it's a girl! How were you able to find out so soon?

  • I thought my "lol" would give it away- no I do not "know" it is a girl...just a very strong feeling :)...so strong I only look at pink things- if my girl come out with an extra leg I will be shocked hee hee
  • My thought is I will buy little stuff here and there to space out the cost. If I lose this baby I will use the stuff of the next if we are never able to have children I will either give as gifts or donate to a women's shelter.  Nothing will go to waste and it's something fun I can do to help me connect to this pregnancy. I explained it that way to DH and he said "Anything you need to do to enjoy it you do it."

  • I already purchased a cute 3 pack of duckie onsies on clearence.

I am putting off buying anything big for while, but if I find a good deal on anything smaller that is gender neutral I will go ahead a buy it now.

  • I didn't even think about loss vs. more practical.  I like to know what I'm having before I buy.
  • I just went out and bought a purple jumper for our 'daughter' that says "I love Daddy" because my husband and I are on the 'speak it into existence' thing. After a painful loss in October, we have been more OPTIMISTIC about this pregnancy. We read this book called 'The Power' by Rhonda Byrne and it is a MAJOR eye opener on how your thoughts turn into reality. So if your happy and feel like things will go well, they will. Keep pushing positive thoughts into your mind and go ahead and buy what you want!
  • I will wait until i am around 14 weeks to buy anything. One of my first purchases will probably be a car seat and matching stroller. I want to get a brown color or something similar that would work for either sex. I keep seeing all these cute baby clothes and it sure makes me wish I was farther along and knew what I was having.

This is our plan.  I did buy a "baby's 1st year" undated calendar on clearance this week.

  • I always bought when I found out.. now expecting # 4,.. with 3 boys.. I am waiting until I find out gender.  i am researching stuff and window shopping and comparing things- as I do shop in kids clothes stores.. plus I am frugal and KNOW prices of things and whats  agreat deal.  I know BRU is having their annual baby days soon as is sears, so i will check out then too.  I have an idea for crib and for car seat already what brand I want- I watch and wait for it to be a great deal/price.

I have a list of what I need.. and I will buy slowely after baby gender is know.

Honestly I keep in mind baby's don't need much and they outgrown things fast

  • I bought an adorable little green velvet Xmas dress that came with red and white candy cane striped tights.  It was on clearance for $6 at Target and they only had one (3-6 month, perfect) so I went ahead and got it.  If I don't have a girl or if this PG doesn't work out, I'll just give it away.  As far as major purchases, I'll probably wait until well into the 2nd trimester and definitely after I find out what I'm having.

One piece of advice I did get from a friend was that if you're planning on having another, try to buy neutral for car seat, stroller, crib, carriers, high chair, etc.  It definitely makes sense but I hadn't really thought of that until she mentioned it.

  • I bought a pacifier and gave it as a present to my DH to tell him we're prego. Beyond that I've gotten some good coupons for wipes, so I've been buying those and that's it. I'm going to wait until 12 weeks before I start buying real things.

  • We haven't bought anything yet, not even a onesie. I am going to try to wait until I hit the 2nd tri but if I see something on major clearance I might not be able to wait. hehe

  • My best friend text me today to let me know she picked something up for baby Q, and whatever it is will be the first thing bought for him/her. I'm very cautious and hesitant to buy anything, because I think it would make it worse if I were to lose the baby. I haven't even looked at cribs or strollers yet... just want to make it through the 1st trimester (and yes, I know that things can go wrong passed that point) and then I'll be able to breathe a little easier.

  • I would LOVE to start buying things; however due to two missed miscarriages I just can't bring myself to do so :( My last one was after we heard and saw a "great" heartbeat....only to find out it stopped beating a few days later.

  • I promised myself I wouldn't buy anything until the 2nd trimester.  I let myself buy two onesies and 2 sleep bags and some wash cloths.

At this point, I look but not knowing the sexes I don't want to go too yellow and green.  I'd like to get some frilly stuff if at least one of them is a girl.  So, now we wait.

  • The day we found out I was pregnant we went out and bought a little stuffed monkey to celebrate. We want to buy a couple things every month just so the cost isn't all at once. But we keep everything in a box in a closet packed away until after my first tri.
