TTC after 35

OPKs

Have you used them?  Do you find the useful?  I briefly tried it the first time I was TTC and it didn't seem all that useful, but maybe I was doing it wrong.  Ultimately I got PG with fertility tx and IUI. My OB doesn't put a lot of stock in charting (and probably not OPKs either).  I'm really hoping that by some miracle I will get PG this time around without needing fertility treatment, but that may be wishful thinking.

Re: OPKs

  • I had a really hard time with OPK's--they always stressed me out.  When my RE asked me to use them to time IUI's, he told me to only use the Clearblue Digitals....there really is no room for interpretation with them.  You either get a smiley or you don't, whereas with the others, you have to decide if the line is dark enough, etc.  Before fertility drugs, I O'd pretty late, so I was using tons of OPK's.  If you O earlier, as I do on Clomid, they aren't so bad because you aren't using them for 10-15 days (or more!)

  • If you do decide to use them I def recommend the digis.  I tried the Internet cheapos and they are so hard to read and they didn't work for me.

I did feel like they stressed me out a little.  I did get a smiley last cycle and I was over the moon.  Every day I didn't get a smiley I was little sad.  I also charted BBT this cycle and that drove me a little nutty.

This is CD 1 for me and this time I have decided to not use anything to keep my stress level down.  We are going to BD every other day starting at CD 10 and hope for the best.

    Good Luck!

  • I agree -- the ClearBlue Digitals are really the only option in my opinion -- the other ones are cheaper -- but they are not worth all of the confusion when you're anxious or stressed out already.  We had a hard time getting pregnant the first time -- in addition to charting, we decided to make the investment in the ClearBlue fertility monitor as well -- it worked.  We're trying again using both methods -- charting is our core method, but having something else "catch" the right days gives me piece of mind as a 2nd set of eyes so to speak.

  • For me, they were more frustrating than useful.  I have irregular and annovulatory cycles at times.  I found the clear blue easy fertility monitor more helpful for me.  Good luck.

  • I use the Wondfo OPKs... I don't have any trouble telling the difference between a negative and a positive on them (there's almost always a second line, and to my eye, it's unmistakeable if the test line is as dark as the control line) I've also started charting my temps, which so far has told me that mt opk's were right last month... I didn't O(I tested 15 days straight with no +), and this month I O'd the day I got the + OPK...Charting is helping me get through the TWW though oddlyl enough. Instead of just sitting and waiting and wondering, I get a piece of data everyday to chew on... I never considered myself a scientific type... but it's making the TWW fly by.
  • Thanks for the feedback!

  • After spending $25 or so a month on the digital tests I bought the cheaper ones you dip in a cup. As others mentioned, these are harder to read, and although the second line looked like it was getting darker and I was sure I was O'ing, my RE confirmed via bloodwork that I did not O. I say either spend the $ on the digitals or don't bother at all. Lesson learned on my part to save $ elsewhere!

  • I use the CBE digital OPKs...like a PP said, you get that smiley face and you know...no interpretation needed. It is SO worth the extra money! Good Luck!
