Preemies

Babbling & Cooing?

Tristan has been going to town now for at least a month, making noises and babbling up a storm.  Our daughter hasn't begun yet.  Our pedi wasn't too concerned yet (said to give her 4-6 more weeks before we had her assessed), but we recently took her to an ENT and he said that she should be producing some sounds by now and that he's concerned about her hearing.  We have an appointment scheduled with an audiologist in a couple weeks.  In the meantime, we are a mess.  She passed her hearing test in the NICU and responds to sounds at home (wakes up to noises, startles).  We were just assuming that she was a late "talker" for her adjusted age.  When did your preemie start babbling and cooing?

Re: Babbling & Cooing?

  • Our daughter has been making some sounds for a month or so, but just really starting going strong with the babbling in the past week or so. (we think her noisy cousin taught her when we were visiting for Christmas :).

    She's 5 1/2 months actual, and 3 1/2 months adjusted.

OT- We had the same Santa outfit for her first Christmas as you have in your picture! I love the raindeer fanny!

  • By babbling do you mean saying dadadada and babababa? If so, my guys started at 6 and 8 months, adjusted. We were a little concerned when it was 8 months but one day he started babbling and he never looked back. I don't think babies are expected to babble until past 6 months.

My boys both started cooing at around 1 month adjusted.

I'm sorry, I'm sure it is stressful :(

  • My son is almost a year actual, 9 months adjusted and has never really babbled (babababa, dadadada, etc.).  Just in the past week or so, he's started "talking" more: badabadamada, etc.  He's always made a bunch of other noises (vowel sounds, "agoo", blowing raspberries, fake coughing, etc.).  Neither my pediatrician nor the early intervention counselor was concerned.
