blood pressure.. call the doctor?

I was in L&D last night for some pain and my blood pressure was 168/86. They sent me home only because there was no protein in my urine. When I arrived at work today I took my blood pressure myself (we have an automatic cuff, I work in a clinic) and it was 134/89, with out eating. I am going to eat my breakfast and then test it again, however when you eat your blood pressure generally goes up. I am wonder if I should call the office and see if they want me to do anything or just wait until my next appointment. Other than the blood pressure and some normal pregnancy things I am feeling fine, however my mom keeps telling me to call.

Re: blood pressure.. call the doctor?

  • i'd maybe give them a call. i had high BP with my first one but was feeling otherwise fine and that night it went downhill extremely quickly and i was induced.

  • I would try taking the BP more than once. When they use the automatic machine thing on me, it freaks me out causing my BP to spike even more. Try taking it two or three times, and see what it is the last couple of times because it might be better once you're accustomed to it. Eating can make it high and so can being up and around. When I was at the hospital last week the nurse told me the proper way for them to take my blood pressure was after I had been stationary for 10 minutes. So possibly try to take it after you're done eating and after you've been sitting for that long? Hopefully that helps. If it stays high I would probably call, it's not that high but it's still important to keep them aware.

  • I vote calling too. They may or may not want you to come in, but they may want you to alter a few things such as your diet. My BP spiked on Monday since my last OB visit, and I am on a low sodium diet and I have to go in every week. I think its best to call you doc and see what they want you to do.
  • I took my BP 3 times all 15 minutes apart and they are all right around 140/94. I just feel funny calling because last night they told me to call if I have a bad head ache, swelling, am dizzy or light headed, which I don't have any of that. But then again those are all signs of high BP. I just weighted myself and I have gained about 8 lbs in 10 days. So I have put a call into the doctor so I am just waiting for them to call me back. I just really don't want to go to L&D for the 3rd time and then get sent home again.

I'd be concerned about the weight gain.If there is anything to be concerned about, IMO, it's best to catch it early enough so that it can be controlled.  I'm glad you called and hope everything is OK. GL!

  • You were absolutly right to call.  That is what they are there for.  Side note on BP make sure you go to the bathroom before.  A full bladder can push it up.

  • I have to monitor my bp at home because I have "white coat syndrome," so it's always high at my appts. I also did develop PIH at the end of my last pregnancy and was put on bed rest. They told me to call if my bp went over 140/90 or I had pre-e symptoms. It's good you called. Sudden/fast weight gain can be a symptom. Make sure you drink lots of water. Hope everything turns out fine!

  • The dr called back he wants me to go in at 1. Just to make sure everything is ok for the weekend so I don't suddenly get worse and have to go to L&D again. He said that the paper work he got back from L&D from last night does not have the high blood pressure that I mentioned on the voicemail I left. I told him that when it was taken the nurse had come it to discharge me. I guess they didn't feel it was necessary to chart.
