Baby Names

Names and combos to get to the nickname "Evie"

We like the nn Evie for a girl. Although, I'm not set on just putting the name "Evie" on the birth certificate.

The only names I can think of are

Genevieve (which I love, but DH says the US isn't ready for this name).

Evangeline...I don't like it.

Evelyn...I don't like it.

Eva/Eve...Maybe...but not sure.

We are also open to doing a first name like Elizabeth paired with Virginia or something...to get Evie that way.

Any suggestions? Should we just go with Genevieve and cross our fingers?

Re: Names and combos to get to the nickname "Evie"

  • I am always curious when I see Genevieve on here- how would you pronounce it? I'd pronounce it the French way, Zhu-nuh-vee-ehv, but I would never get the nn Evie (if it's pr. Ee-vee) out of that. Would you say something closer to Jenna-veeve?

  • huh?  Genevieve is a legit and normal name and super cute.  you guys are over thinking it.  Use Genevieve and pronounce it the simpler americanized way of Jenna-veeve.

  • Haha, I like your husbands response to Genevieve. I think it's cute and doesn't sound "foreign" to me at all. It also makes for a beautiful adult name, so when she's 35 she doesn't have to continue to go by Evie if she doesn't want to.

  • Are your pronouncing "Evie" like "ev-ee" or "ee-vee"?  The only other names I can think of that would  bring to mind the "ev-ee" pronunciation would be Evan and Everrett and I really hate boys names on girls.  I have heard the name Evelyn pronunced as "Eev-a-lyn" but I'm not a fan of that either.

  • I like Genevieve & think America is 'ready' for it. I don't find it too 'out there' at all, if that's what you're worried about.

This. My ex-bf's mom is Yvonne, and her husband always called her Evie which I found adorable. It was the first name, other than those you already mentioned that made me think Evie.

I agree! Genevieve may be a little more uncommon or underused than some of the names he's used to hearing, but it's totally normal! It's beautiful and refreshing!

  • If your DH likes Genevieve, I say go for it!  I fought tooth and nail for that name for DD, but DH woudln't go for it.

Love Evie too, but I agree it's better as a nickname than a full name.

  • Genevieve is a beautiful name. Most pronounce it like jenna-veeve which I think it pretty and traditionally-American. I also like the French zhun-vee-ehv (that is hard to type phonetically) Think Jean like a French man not like blue jeans

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • You could also consider Evette, Evan, or Gwenevieve. I am an Elizabeth, and Evie is the one nickname nobody has ever called me, so you might not want to go with that one. I would say you might have better luck with Vanna, even.

  • I love Genevieve.  I wish I could use it but I have to many other people I need to name for.  I've met several Genevieve's subbing and they go either by Evie or Jenna, so I think it's fine for America.

  • I love Genevieve. My friend has a three year old Genevieve. She goes by 'Gen', but I like Evie or Jenna for it much better. Her name is Yvette, or Evette which can also be shortened to 'Evie'.

  • I also like the name Geneva, I think Evie could be pulled from that as well

  • Thanks, you guys are awesome!

I would pronounce it JENNA-vieve. And Evie would be EE-vie. Although, I pulled this name from the UK's top baby names and I liked how it looked on paper...I've never heard it used here, so hopefully the mass pronounces it EE-vie too.

I love the french pronunciation...but I know for sure everyone would mess it up lol.
