Tips to help constipation?

DD has been constipated the last couple of days. Its so sad to see her crying in pain when she has to go. We are working on upping her fiber intake. She's never really had juice but I tried that tonight and she won't drink it. Any methods or suggestions that worked for your LO would be much appreciated!

  • Fruit fruit fruit! Make a smoothie with sherbet, no banannas and no dairy. Good luck, I feel ur pain. It hard to see them like that.

  • We watered down prune juice and that works sometimes.  We are to the point of using Miralax to get things moving otherwise DS wont have a movement and then it is very painful.

  • Ditto KK on FRUIT! The more watery, the better. Cuties are everywhere right now, and they work like a charm. As does pineapple. Grapes, too. No bananas.

Before DD started eating solids, the doctor recomended straight (non watered down) apple juice. It did help once, but I wasn't super impressed. That may just be DD though, so it may be worth a shot! It took several days of offering it constantly before she'd drink it.

Good luck Sad Constipated babies is a sad thing.

  • Glycerine suppositories are great for instant (or near instant relief). Then of course, I'd address adding more fiber and maybe more water to her diet.

  • The only thing that finally got DS regular was a daily dose of Miralax.  We also tried pushing water on him 24/7, fiber gummie vitamins, lots of fruit, etc....nothing really worked.  The Miralax definitely got him moving.

Ditto this except we give the Miralax every other day or it's too much for her.

We also still pay attention to her water intake and give lots of fiber (black beans, raisins, etc) and try to avoid too much of the constipating stuff (bananas, rice, dairy, etc).

  • Thanks guys! We are trying lots of fruit and adding more water. Of course now she has a high fever and I can't get much in but I appreciate all the tips.

  • A has been constipated for about a week.  The other day I started giving her beans for dinner.  She's had them once a day and has been very regular ever since!  They are a great source of fiber.

That's the weird thing, her diet is already pretty high in fiber.  She eats a ton of beans!  Her nickname is beanie because she would live on them if we let her.

  • My DD is only 6 months so I am sure your 1 yr old diet is different but she had a constipation issue a few weeks ago and the doctor told me tomtry baby food prunes. I gave her a few spoonfuls, which she actually loved (gross) and it worked like a champ! Gave them to her in the evening and the next morning she did the business!
