Introducing siblings

I am having a scheduled c section next Monday. DH will be at the hospital with me. DD will be with my in laws. It's important to me to be there when DD "meets" her baby brother the first time. With DD, DH went with her from the OR and helped with measuring, bathing, etc while I was in recovery. My parents and in laws watched through the glass. However, if we do the same thing this time, DD will be there watching too and I'll miss it all in recovery by myself. :( I want DH to be with DS but also want to be a part of DD meeting DS. I hate having a c section but I'm not a good candidate for a VBAC.

How did it go for you?  Any suggestions on how I can be a part of it?  Or should I just stop stressing over it. DD is really too young to remember anyway. Thanks!

Re: Introducing siblings

  • I have DH and the baby stay with me in recovery, and anyone who decides to come to the hospital during my c/s has to wait in the waiting room until I'm settled in my room to come meet the baby. I prefer people to wait until we call and let them know it's okay to come visit. My ILs brought DD1 to the hospital when DD2 was born, and we were already settled in our room so I was right there for her first glimpse of her baby sister. Not that a 14-month-old is very impressed, but I too wanted to be a part of it.

  • I waited until the morning I was discharged to have the girls meet for the first time.  I didn't want DD1 to flip out when she had to leave me in the hospital.  So she came with my MIL 2 days after DD2 was born and we all left the hospital together.  When she came in I made sure to have DD2 in the bassinet so DD1 could come to me first.  Then Daddy brought DD2 to us.  We have the meeting on video and I love it!

  • DS was home sick (of course) when I had DD so he couldn't come to the hospital.  I missed him SOOOO much, but I honestly think it was best.  I think he may have gotten upset that he had to go home and I was staying with DD.

Once we got home, we made a bigger deal of the presents that DD got for DS then we did about DD hersellf.  We had a stash of small gifts in the closet and whenever someone came to visit the new baby we would give him one so he felt just as special.  Right or wrong to spoil the crap out of him, it worked, and he LOVED her and we never had a problem wih jealousy or anything.  (Fingers crossed that the transition from 2-3 goes as well.)

Thanks!  I really like the present stash idea!  Plus, it gives me an excuse to shop for DD!  :)
