Can I brag a bit? Diet rave!

Ok y'all, I've been apprehensive to say much about the diet that DH and I have been on because it's kind of out there, but I'm having so much success on it and I feel so good I have to brag about my success to someone and you're it.

Some of you may remember that a few months ago I asked about experiences with ketogenic/ultra low carb diets.  We started it on December 1st, cheated during Christmas, and have been going strong since.  The overall gist is to aim for 60% calories from fat, 30% from protein and 10% from carbs.  For me this means 42g net carbs or less per day on a 1700 calorie diet.  Absolutely no bread, pasta, potatoes, sugar, etc...  I cook every meal and we eat almost exclusively "whole" foods.

I used to always be achy, headaches off and on, and unmotivated.  I have constant energy now.  I was planning on just focusing on diet for the first 6 weeks or so before adding in exercise, but I was going nuts sitting around the house and wanted to move!  That's not like me.  I've been working out 4 or 5 days per week for 3 weeks now.

I'm never hungry.  I actually have to force myself to eat breakfast (which, again, isn't like me) and eating whole foods that are high fat and moderate protein keeps me satiated far longer than carbs ever did.  On days that I'm good about tracking my food I find that I really should eat more than I have.

Here are the numbers: I'm down 13.5lbs, -2" waist, -1" belly, -2.25" thigh, 1" upper arm.  I'm more than halfway towards my first scale goal :D

  • Woohoo! Great job there. :)  I'm curious about any documentation/blogs/sites you have on it - any recs?

I've been learning towards eating in the Paleo fashion and it sounds similar.. I wonder what the differences are.

I'm by no means an expert on Paleo, but I think they can have a lot more natural sugars like from fruit, and some root veggies like sweet potatoes.  I think they usually don't have any dairy, which is veryvery un-Keto.

I learned all about it from the Keto forum on Reddit.  Sorry no clickies in Chrome

  • That's so great!  Congrats!

Can you give an example of a typical breakfast/lunch/dinner/snack(s) day?  I'm trying to wrap my head around what that looks like because the numbers are confusing me.

Yeah, I get that ;)  I had a hard time buying groceries at the beginning.  My main focus has been counting carbs, I'm not great at maintaining macro percentages so a more strict keto'er would probably poke a dozen holes in our current diet.  I'm working on it.

Most people have omelettes with cheese and a fatty meat like bacon for breakfast, but I'm allergic to eggs so I usually have leftovers from dinner the night before.  Breakfast is my problem meal because typical breakfast foods are usually super sugary, carby, or eggs.

Lunch: A slice of "Pizza" made with a cauliflower crust, lots of cheese, and pepperoni plus a small spinach side salad.

Dinner: Steak with butter on it and lots of asparagus with goat cheese.

ETA: I usually have a cup of coffee with a leeeetle bit of french vanilla Coffeemate in it with breakfast.  It's totally the opposite of healthy and whole foodsy and has too much sugar stuff, but it's the only way I like it.  I only ever have one cup and I've been weaning myself off of the creamer.  For the rest of the day I only drink water, but I've always been like that.  Other people put heavy cream and stevia in their coffee.

  • Ooooh... CAULIFLOWER crust?  Hmm! I must dig up a recipe!  I've found a quinoa crust recipe that I've been meaning to try, but that sounds interesting too.
  • Wow, that's pretty interesting!

Congrats! Sounds like you are doing a great job.

  • Wow, that's impressive! And you sample menu looks really tasty.

A question I have for this diet, one I've had for all of the higher fat diets, is what about clogged arteries, heart disease, and the like?

The people on the Keto forums I frequent cite all sorts of studies disproving the link between increased fat intake and high cholesterol, heart disease, high blood pressure, etc...  I'll admit that I'm not sure that I drink that kool-aid but doctors have been prescribing a ketogenic diet for epileptics for 80 years now, and contrary to the "common sense" that increasing fat will cause all these problems it's rarely seen in reality.  If you're interested in seeing the actual studies and articles check out the FAQ I liked to above.

I have a pretty substantial amount of weight to lose (at least 50 more pounds) so my current plan is to continue on the diet and then slowly reintroduce some healthier carbs like sweet potatoes, carrots, etc.. and scale back fat intake as I do it.  While I do definitely see this as a lifestyle change at this point, I also do have some questions about the potential longterm effects on my health and I'll be talking with my doctor about it.

I did a little more reading. Very interesting indeed! I'd love to hear about your progress and what else you learn. GL!

Congrats!  I would have killed someone by now with no carbs.

I thought the same thing, but you should see some of the scandalous things we've been eating.  I had bacon wrapped jalapeno peppers stuffed with cream cheese for lunch.  The only thing that would've been better for the diet would be adding butter.  For real.

  • Did you go through a weird breath phase? (been reading about this off and on all day!)
  • And how is your digestion? Does it interfere with regularity?

Yeah, my breath is still kinda weird.  I think I could actually tell immediately when I went into ketosis because there was a sudden and distinct difference.  It's not bad, but it's definitely different.   They say it's the ketones.

As for digestion, I've been totally fine but I know other people sometimes have issues with constipation if they're not eating enough high fiber veggies.

I also didn't have any real issues with "Keto Flu" in the beginning.  I had a little headache on days 3 and 4 but after that I felt great.
