What are your restrictions on modified bed rest?

I was put on modified bed rest today. As my midwife explained it, I have to rest on my side for 2 hours in the morning and in the afternoon, and have to just relax and take it easy at night. She said nothing too strenuous, like vacuuming or cooking big meals, but that I'm able to get up and make myself some food. I forgot to ask if I'm able to leave the house to go grocery shopping or get some food. What does your Dr say about modified bed rest?

  • I have been on this since 24 weeks. Everything you have said is the same for me. But i was told grocery shopping is ok. Just no shopping for a large amount of time. I still am working (have a desk job). But it hasn't been too bad. Still can d most things. Dh just gets to help more with the cleaning!!!

I was told I could drive. Both doctor and hospital did not mention this. But pelvic rest unfortunately is true :( and lifting nothing more than a milk gallon.

  • I was told to not lift anything over 10lbs, no strenuous activity like cardio, but I can do light stretches as needed, no heavy cleaning/cooking, and no driving and no riding in cars for more than 20mins when necessary and when I do, I'm always in a reclined position. If I do need to go out to shop for example, I'm to use those motorized chairs/wheelchairs since I'm not allowed to be on my feet for a long time. Basically, my dr told me to treat my bed rest as though I'm recovering from major admominal surgury and take it VERY EASY. Other than going to dr appts, I've haven't done much, a lunch/dinner date here and there, very short shopping trips and I don't go alone b/c I tend to get very sore and tire easily. I've been on modified bed rest my entire pregnancy and basically my DH has taken over 90% of the household chores to make this pregnancy as easy on me as possible.

  • Mod bed rest.. no grocery shopping, but going through a drive through shouldnt be a problem. Full bed rest and pelvic rest would mean no driving either.

I have been on Mod best rest since october. It was mostly just a "stay off your feet and dont pick up heavy stuff" restriction. Once i got past 37 weeks, Dr said to do whatever I felt comfortable doing.

  • No trips outside of the house other than my weekly Dr's appointment. I also need to stay horizontal as much as possible, no prolonged sitting. No housework, pelvic rest. I can go to the bathroom and make a quick meal, and move around the house a bit throughout the day. Some of my restrictions may be lifted once I get to 30 weeks.

  • I was on full bed rest until yesterday, when I was placed on modified bed rest.

Full bed rest: I could go downstairs once a day, and back up the stairs once a day. I could stand for a 15 min shower, then 3x a day for 5 mins to get food. that was it. I couldn't do jack other than that.

As of yesterday: I can FINALLY sit in my home office chair and work (i work from home); I can make an easy dinner, do some laundry, go up and down the stairs a COUPLE more times (nothing strenuous - apparantly stairs are really bad?!?),  I can go out for milk and bread but not full shopping. Can't be on my feet for more than 30 mins to an hour. I think that means I can sweep, clean toilets, and throw some dishes in the dishwasher, but can't stand up to vacuum, scrub the floor and definitely no lifting, but that's any time in pregnancy, not just bed rest. Don't want that placenta detaching!

  • Interesting how modified bed rest differs for everyone.

My orders are no driving, no shopping.  I only leave the house for doctor appointments.  I am allowed to go to the bathroom, shower, walk around the house, get something to eat/drink but no cooking.  Basically, I sit or lie around all day like a knot on a log.  I am not to do anything really useful.

  • I was allowed to do one activity per day - one quick errand outside the home, load the dishwasher, vacuum, etc.

Go to the bathroom and get/make food.

Essentially I stayed on the couch with my feet up all day and only got up when it was necessary.  My MFM was happy with this.
