How long to take off for maternity leave?

How long are you all taking off for your maternity leave if you are going back to work (or for those of you who already have kids, how long did you take off)?

I can get 6 weeks paid STD time for regular delivery, 8 weeks for c-sec. I keep hearing from everyone that is not enough. I can't afford to take a lot of unpaid time, but I would love to get some feedback from others about how much time you took or are planning to take...

  • I took 12 weeks (6 weeks STD paid at 60% of my salary, 3 weeks paid (using sick + vacation time, and 3 weeks unpaid). After that I worked for only 20 hours a week for 12 weeks. I wanted all the time I could get.

  • With #1 I took 9 weeks on a very crappy STD plan that paid crap. It paid a flat $200 a week for 5 weeks then I had to pay back my insurance so I got like $80.  It was the worst.

With #2, I had a much better STD plan that paid a flat rate equivalent to 6 weeks of pay so I took a total of 12 weeks.  6 of those weeks were unpaid.

I would take as much time as you can financially afford to.

  • With my first I took 16 weeks.  That was a good amount of time.  I had a c-section and breastfeed fro 9months so it was nice to have that time with her.  I went back only 2 shifts a week.  After this baby comes (any day now!) I am not sure I will go back more than 1 shift a week.  Daycare is expensive in CT!
