My states VBAC rates are atrocious. The best is 15% and my local hospital is 10% for 2009. I know some of that is probably by choice but I also know while they are done they aren't pushed/encouraged.
I swear if I lived closer to the border I'd drive to our neighbor to the north. 2.5-3 hrs is just a little longer than I'm comfortable with.
Re: I am shocked...
Yuck. The national VBAC rate is under 10% so unfortunately, those numbers sound pretty typical. Keep in mind those numbers probably include a LOT of women who never had any plans to try for a VBAC at all.
What is your doctor/MW's VBAC success rate? I think that matters a lot more.
Ask next time you go in for a pap smear or whatever. They will probably know, especially if they are supportive of VBAC.
The OB I had my VBAC with had a 90% success rate.
I think the good news is that the national average success rate for those who attempt is around 67%......which is about the same success rate for first time Moms. So, if women choose to do it....we're pretty successful. I take comfort in that, because that more directly impacts my chances.
I think it will take years to change minds and insurance policies to get better attempt rates.
