LO Upset at Night and Won't Feed From Breast

This is a repost from breastfeeding board.

The last few nights I've noticed a pattern with LO.  He'll feed great all day long at the breast and most of the time will be in a milk coma afterwards.  When I go to take him upstairs for bed he'll start to get really fussy and upset to the point that he'll latch on, but won't stay latched on for more than a couple of minutes so he just gets more and more upset since he's not really getting anything.  I don't remember how we finally got him to sleep before last night (probably due to sleep depreviation lol), but last night my DH suggested that we give him a bottle with the breast milk I'd pumped earlier in the day.  Wouldn't you know he sucked it down and then went right to bed.

I have no problem giving him a bottle of pumped milk before bed, but has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions on what I can do to prevent it.  We're still trying to get on a night time schedule so I'm wondering if starting it a bit earlier would help.

Any help or suggestions would be great! Thanks!

  • My Lo kinda does the same thing. My pedi says that by the end of the day my supply is probably low which leads to a slower let down. This frustrates LO along with him being tired= perfect storm.

I just have to make that the time for DH to give LO a bottle of pumped milk, and wait for my supply to even out.

    hope this helps!:)

  • It was suggested on the breastfeeding board that it could be do to a slow flow which apparently in the evening naturally slows down and that breast compressions would help.  So that sounds sort of like what your pedi is saying as well.

Last night I made sure we had a bottle ready to go and what seemed to help was that I'd try to get him to latch on first, and then when he would get upset give him just a little bit of the bottle to settle him down and then try to re-latch him while doing compressions and that seemed to help him out a bit.  We did end up giving him the last 2 oz of the bottle for his last feeding around 10 - 10:30 and was then out until 2:30ish.

I did a follow up question on the breastfeeding board asking if there was a difference between low supply and slow flow (Flow Issue vs Supply Issue) to see if they were linked in some way or separate since most of my searches last night seemed to group the two together.  Maybe someone will post something that will help out both of us ; )

    Good Luck to you!

  • I was having the same issue. My supply is low at night and he would get so frustrated trying to get milk out so last night we gave him a bottle of pumped milk (4oz) and then I pumped at the same time and only got an ounce from each side. It worked out great. He slept for 4.5 hours straight for the first time. Hope it wasn't just a fluke!
