3rd Trimester

Long Hair and Split Ends!

With this pregnancy my long hair is constantly breaking and it has a lot of split ends, anything I can put on it to give it some strength or give it vitamins.

  • usually your prenatals help your hair the best. Try leaving your conditioner in longer and rinse with cool water instead of hot. Stop blow drying/styling if you do... And get a light trim/hair cut. You can also try a different brand of shampoo and conditioner. PG can change how your hair reacts to the products you use.

  • Nothing corrects or "fixes" split ends. You should get a really good trim! That's the only cure. Otherwise you are wasting your money on products instead.

    This.

My hair is awful this pregnancy. My hair is long, and I am getting DH used to the idea of a serious (3-4 inch) chop to make it nice again.

  • I have long hair and have always had healthy hair. Yes, the first few months of pregnancy it was even better than ever but I also am experiencing a change in my hair once i hit the 3rd trimester.  It got brittle and is now thin in certain areas :( I got a haircut but didnt seem to help.

I hope it goes back to normal after the pregnancy.

  • Any of you recommend a good mask to deep condition your hair? Anything I can get at a drug store possibly? My hair has gone through stages of thick, thin, growth spurts, etc. with this pregnancy. A trim will help your ends, but minimizing the styling and heat towards the hair will make a difference.

My favorite deep conditioning is just olive oil.  I coat my hair in it, zap it with a blow dryer to heat it up, then put on a shower cap or wrap it in plastic wrap to trap in the heat.  Sit around for about 30 minutes, then wash out.  You'll probably have to lather up 2-3 times to get the oil out.  My hair is really soft and shiny the next couple of days.

The particles in Olive Oil are way too big to penetrate the hair shaft. You are basically coating your hair in grease.

  • Going for a trim and then giving up heat-styling for a short time is the best thing you can do for you hair. My hair seemed to be breaking a lot more since becoming pregnant as well (probably b/c baby is sucking up my vitamins), but since I've stopped heat-styling, it is so much softer and healthier. I will probably straighten once or twice before baby comes (for baby shower/maternity pics), but I think it's great that I was able to give my hair a break.

As far as products go, I started using Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie about a month ago. I put it on towel dried hair and then just clip it up. It provides more moisture/less curl enhancement, but I like it.

  • I have very long hair, it pratically touches my butt, lol so I know how hard it is to care for it. First, you need to get a good trim and get those split ends cut b/c there's no real solution to fixing it and the longer you keep them, the worse they will get. Second, stop or reduce the amount of heat you apply to your hair and that includes washing/rinsing your hair w/hot water. You should only be using lukewarm water to shampoo and a cool water rise to remove the conditioner. Also, try and not wash your hair so much, I have dry hair and only wash it twice a week. Third, try changing your brand of shampoo/conditioner b/c sometimes that makes a big difference. Fourth, drink lots of water, use a humidifier at night if the air in your home is dry, and try to eat food that's rich in omegas b/c the fats/oils in them are said to promote healthy hair growth. Lastly, treat yourself to a good weekly/biweekly moisturizing hair treatment. You can find them in your local Target, Walmart, CVS, ect. Hope this helps!

Unfortunately this is true..nothing will fix them except for a trim.  You can prevent them though by not washing as much (try dry shampoo and wash every other day) using a hair dryer on low setting, and trying some leave- in conditioner to protect from heat.

Pregnancy does mess your hair all up.  My baby makes mine all static!
