pre-kdgtn program for 4y.o. in Fairfax???

hi, i'm new to the area and looking for a full-time or part-time pre-kindergarten program for my almost 5 y.o.  she is very smart, reading well and scored at the 97th percentile on the bracken.  i need a program with a curriculum, not just a daycare b/c she will be bored.  we were recommended to look into montessori programs, but i'd still love your input and suggestions.

we live in fairfax city off of main street between the honda & nissan dealers and the washington sports/fitness center.  i have newborn twins so i'd like something nearby.

  • One of my friends takes her daughter to Merrit Academy, I know its in Fairfax I'm just not sure where but she's really liked it there.
  • We used to go to Merritt Acadment, just up rt 50 by nutley, so about 2 or 3 miles from you, and loved it.  We never tried their pre-k, as we left when DD was younger, but we have friends there still and they really like it still.
  • I'm wildly pro-Montessori, but I'm sorry I don't know specific schools in that area... good luck and wow - twins - your life must be very exciting!

  • thanks ladies!  we passed merritt academy and looked them up online.  i was so disappointed b/c it's so expensive.  coming from ohio, i'm not used to paying that much ... i think it was over $1300 a month.  we were paying $974 for Primrose in Ohio, and most people thought it was crazy expensive.  i cant/havent wrapped my head around the 1300 ... at least not since we'll soon be on one income (i'm on maternity leave with all 3 girls).  hmm, maybe i'll see if they have something for part-time.  three days a week would be great for us all!!!

  • When I searched for Pre-schools, I found there was no good centralized list.  I would try doing a google map search to see what is nearby.  Does your employer or your husband's have an EAP?  They were pretty helpful in doing a lot of the research for me.  DCUM has a lot of reviews of pre-schools which was helpful.  (I do think it is more DC/Arlington/Bethesda focused than Fairfax, but there is definitely information about Fairfax options on there).

Part time is a whole 'nother story - you'll have many, many more options if you are just looking for half day or part time.  Actual schools/centers are really $$ but there a blue million part time programs out of churches and such.  HeyJellisy is right, there doesn't seem to be any centralized list, at least not where she and I live, besides literally just looking in the yellow pages.

It'll take time to hunt, but I'm sure it will work out.  Good luck!
