Babies: 0 - 3 Months

was anyone else told not to take a bath for two weeks after delivery?

and if so did you listen? I'm wondering what taking a bath could hurt, stitches-wise. Is there like a risk of infection or something? I'm DYING to take a bath and I still have a week left until they told me I can, I'm seriously considering cheating though.

  • I wasn't told that but I don't really want to take a bath while I'm still bleeding.  I'll wait until the bleeding stops before taking a bath.  I can't wait for one either!

  • Yes, it's because there's a risk of infection since your all "open" after delivery.Smile
  • I was told no baths until after my six week checkup. He explained it to me that it was for the same reason as the no sex rule, because it introduces bacteria into the vagina and the area where the placenta detached is an open wound and can get infected.

  • I was told to soak in the tub several times a day...I didn't have any issues with infection. I was told this after both births, with one I had a few stitches and none with the other.

  • I was told no baths until after my 6 wk apt. due to the risk of infection, but they did recomend I do a daily sitz bath with the little sitz bucket from the hospital... which I never did because it just grossed me out to sit in water while still bleeding...

I did take two showers a day (while DH was off of work still...now taking a shower is a luxury LOL) and I always put warm water in my Peri bottle. This really helped.

I was told the exact opposite, I was told to bathe 3-6 times a day.

This exactly. And the "gross factor" was totally outweighed by the amount of relief the baths provided!  I just sat in the tub, didn't lay Down or anything. But I also sat in blood for 2 solid days at the hospital!! (I constantly was changing the chuck but I was bleeding so much it didn't really matter. )

Same here. No one told me not to take one and it wasn't in my discharge papers.

  • Same for me -- no bathing, sex, or douching for 6 weeks....  I wouldn't risk it!

  • No I was told to sit in a warm bath multiple times a day to help with the pain and discomfort from having the baby, the epesiotomy, hemorrhoids all of it. I know you should not use bubbles or other things like that, but plain water should not hurt you. People deliver in the bath and labor in the bath and their cervix is fully dialated and they don't risk infection from that... I find nothing more relaxing then taking a bath especially when you are hurting and uncomfortable down there. I have 2 children and I am expecting my 3rd.

This, and I was so happy to finally take  that first long super hot bubble bath a few days ago. It was wonderful. I wouldn't risk it, you don't want to get an infection.

  • You should not be taking a full bath. Your cervix is still open and you can get an infection very easily. However, a sitz bath is great for healing. Your stitches dissolve 3x faster and tears heal 2x faster when you take 3 sitz baths a day. These baths should have 4-6 inches of warm (not hot) water. Sit for 15 minutes at a time.

    this,

the guide is water in the tub below your belly button so the water pressure is less likely to push water up into your vagina.

very very warm water, it speeds healing.

This,  and ugh it felt so good and helped sooo much with healing!
