baby wearing-repost from 3rd tri and natural birth board

Is anyone else planning on trying the baby wearing thing?  Or for anyone other than FTM's, have you done it before?  If so, how did it go?  Any tips?  I'm wondering if I should bring a sling or carrier to the hospital so I can start it ASAP and which slings/carriers are the best.  Also, I have a moby wrap and it is SO confusing!  It looks like once I get the hang of it, it will be amazing, but where and when do you FTM's plan on starting to use it and for 2+ moms, where are the ideal places to use it?  I can't imagine walking into the grocery store and having to wrap that thing all around me and get the LO situated before beginning to shop...I feel like I would have a line of people a mile long behind me waiting for me to get moving! :P  Thanks!!

  • I'm going to baby wear as much as possible. I have a moby wrap and an ergo with the newborn insert, which is more for DH at this point. I read a lot of people get the moby wraped around them before they go out and then just have to get the baby out of the car and put him in once they get where they're going. Sounds like a good idea to me so you don't have to be fussing with it when you get somewhere. Although, I'm sure after doing it a few times, it probably gets easier. I haven't tried it yet =)

  • I was not successful in getting DS to be happy in a carrier, but I plan to try different things this time.  I have a Moby now ( I had a homemade one before that was part of the problem, i think) and my Ergo is on it's way!

If you plan to wear the Moby, you will want to get it on properly before leaving the house.  It's a more complicated design to wear, so until you get it down for sure, you won't want to mess around in the parking lot in the cold to figure it out.  I plan to just put it on, wear my coat over it and put my DD in it from her carseat once we get to the store.

As for the Ergo, you might already know this, but make sure you either froggy the legs or criss cross them so that they are comfortable.  It's not for at least a few months before a baby is big enough to put their legs around your waist.

  • I was scared of the Moby so I got the Baby K'Tan. I guess it's the Moby with the guesswork taken out of it? We'll see! :)

I plan to baby wear as much as possible, but I don't think I'll start until I get home. I imagine I'll be holding her plenty then, so a few days of waiting won't be the end of the world.

  • I just got my Mobi yesterday and spent a little time figuring it out, but I think it's hard with my belly as big as it is right now.  As far as wearing baby in the hospital we will not do that.  On our tour we were told that they do not let you walk around the halls with baby unless baby is in the hospital bassinet--it's their security thing so check on policy at your hospital

  • I wear my babies as soon as I'm home. I have a moby wrap, it's super easy once you get the hang of it and it just feels comfy for both mom and baby. It's so nice to have their little head right there where you can smell and kiss them:) I also have an Ergo with the infant insert. Also very easy with a little practice. I have not had a winter baby before so I have no idea how it's going to work with lots of layers going into a store. There are a lot of baby wearing sites that are awesome if you just search "baby wearing." Good luck.

  • Baby could not be carried outside of the room in the hospital without the alarm going off. She needed to be in the isolette.

We use the K'tan. Once you get the hang of wraps they are pretty easy. Not sure why you feel it must be started right away, but you certainly can. Phoebe was in hers at four days old when we went out to eat.

  • I baby wear as much as possible with my kids. I think DD lived in the sleepy wrap (similar to the moby) when she was an infant and then she moved up to the beco.  I would also recommend like PP said wrapping the moby at home so you just have to pop your baby in at the store.  I do have the sleepy wrap packed in the hospital bag but probably won't use it until we get home.
