New Year wellness check-in

Happy 2012! All of the triumphs and failures of 2011 are behind you. As Anne Shirley would say, "Marilla, isn't it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?"

How are you doing? Did you start a new health habit or two at the new year, or are you holding steady?

QOTD: What's the worst health advice you ever got? If you didn't realize it was bad at the time, did you take it?

Re: New Year wellness check-in

  • I agreed to start doing the p90x 10 minute workout with L in the evening. But we haven't started. L started feeling crummy on Monday and by yesterday she had the flu. And since I have no motivation and have had 2 rough days at work and been playing the role of a single parent....

I have brought my lunch 2 out of 2 days this week, but also negated it by buying coffee for breakfast (my bringing lunch is more of a cost measure than a nutrition - though I am guessing most anything is better for my body than cafeteria food.) I need to work on getting breakfast options.

QOTD: I can't remember bad health advice. But then again I am a HORRIBLE patient (ie. the last physical I had was when the boys were 6 weeks old. Yea. They are 5.5y old now.)

  • I stopped eating daily, non-special-occasion-type sugar again on January 1st, which is a relief after all the chocolate and candy I ate around the holidays. At some point I realized that I just wasn't doing WW anymore, so I dropped my online membership and have returned to the simplest possible method: recording my calories in a nice notebook. It's going well so far. I'm using the calorie estimate they provided me for gradual weight loss when I had metabolic testing done, and it feels like a totally reasonable amount of food, so we'll see. My biggest downfall is definitely lack of consistency - I know what to eat and I can hang on for a few months, but then I just get sick of it and gradually stop paying attention. I'm hoping that winnowing the whole thing down to just these two things - sugar and calories - will help me overcome my inconcistency.

QOTD: When I injured my knee training for a marathon, the orthopedist and his physical therapist both told me that I was too old to run, I should have started 10 years ago, and my knee would never heal enough to run a marathon. They advised that I quit and find some other exercise to do. Instead I found a new orthopedist and physical therapist who got my knee back to 100% and taught me how to maintain it, and I expect to be running for many years to come. I usually very much take doctors at their word, so I'm glad I listened to my instincts for once.

  • I'm way behind on new years wellness/health goals and it is only Jan 5. oops. I need to get on the ball.

QOTD: I pulled something in my back playing rugby 2.5 yrs ago (it still bugs me sometimes) and after 2 weeks when I was still having searing pain when I tried to run, etc, the doc told me I needed to stop being a weekend warrior and lose weight. Now, I am a little chubby but I am not obese and I am reasonably fit. I did a half marathon 3 weeks later (slowly and painfully...). I haven't been to a doc since Surprise

  • I'm committed to making 2012 my year! I'm back on WW and have addressed a health concern.  I've also signed up for a Zumba class (that totally kicked my ass on tuesday).  If you dont see me checking in on here on thursdays, hunt me down!! lol
  • I ate lots of delicious things over the holidays and gained about 15 lbs ("the holidays" as I'm defining them stretched from our  mid-November vacation right up until New Year's).  Yesterday I finally put my foot down, started tracking again, went to the gym and curbed my crazy eating.  I already feel better, mostly just emotionally.  It's nothing new though -- just the same old WW stuff I've been doing for a couple of years.

QOTD: the South Beach Diet.  I don't necessarily think it's a terrible idea, it just will never work for me to cut anything out of my diet completely, especially something that I love as much as sugar!  Moderation in everything, via WW, has worked much better for me.

  • I'll play. As I believe I've mentioned, 2011 was a great year for me in terms of wellness. I'm down 3 sizes/40lbs and loving how I feel holistically. I'm eating vegan whole foods, avoiding refined carbs/sugars, drinking lots of water, moving more (although I need to be better about this as my metabolism is in transition again with the intro of whole foods). So far D.C. is great because I'm walking a lot, so I want to keep that up when I go home.

Today I turned down carrot cake at a staff meeting/birthday celebration and I'm sure nearly everyone (who just met me and have no knowledge of my recent transitions) thought I was kooky.

Goals for 2012: Stay feeling this good. Move more. Mindful eating. PCP/TTC.

QOTD: I can't recall bad advice to myself, but I do love that my health care providers are impressed that my health has improved (my thyroid functioning better than ever). I've read/heard lots about various diets/methods and I try to go with what resonates. I'm reading In Defense of Food and enjoying it.
