Which bottles/nipples do you use?

Hi ladies,

I'm a second time mom. My first took the bottle fine, but my second (3 months old) is refusing it. For the record, we have the platex nurser bottle and she did take it )expressed milk) from day 5 until week 6. Just 1 bottle a day to help with weight gain. Then she started to refuse it. I was trying with her a few days every week, but she wasnt having it. I also tried the medela nipples since I pump right into it. I need to try other bottles now.

Day 1 at daycare she took 5 oz, day 2 she took 4 oz. She nurses when i pick her up and then 2 more times before bed and once before i drop her off. Aside from the fuss she puts up when she see's the bottle, she is happy and will smile and giggle. I am just concerned about her weight gain.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Avent, but I'm EP so I don't know if he would've had any kind of nipple confusion or if he would've refused or not.

  • We had the same problem - DS originally took the medela bottles (after trying the soothie bottles and the breastflow bottles) when he was little and then around 2 months he started to refuse them.  I wasn't very good at giving bottles very often and when he started to refuse the medelas that he had been taking I knew I needed to get him used to something because I was going back to work in a couple of weeks.

I had to go out and buy 3-4 individual bottles to try (I left them unopened and used one at a time so I could return the unopened ones.)  The first one I tried was the tommee tippee and he took to it right away.  So, in total we tried 4 different bottles before finding one he would take.  He has no problems going back and forth between the tommee tippee's and the boob.

  • Born Free is great, very similar to breastfeeding shape/size for us. Similac also just came out with a new bottle, the Smart Bottle. Bought one at Target yesterday...and I have to say I like it even more than the Born Free. We also went through a bottle/nipple refusal period, I didn't think I was going to be able to return to work...but he eventually took the right bottle. Medela worked OK for awhile, but they are so small of a nipple base, and now he easily collapses them.
  • We use both Dr. Browns and Tommee Tippee without issue.

  • Thanks so much ladies! So far we have tried the Medela, Platex nursers, Advent, Soothies and the Tommee Tippee and she wouldnt take them. I'll have to try the similac one next. I have been nursing her when I can to prevent her from eating all night. She will take about 1 oz from a bottle, but it takes her teacher a good hour for it to happen. She just plays with it in her mouth.
  • I'll also try the Born  free ones next!
