First Trimester Weight Gain!?

I dont know if I am alone on this one, but I have been reading articles and books and they all recommend a weight gain of 1-5 pounds in the first trimester....I can safely say I have passed that up already and am only 8 weeks! I believe I have gained about 8 pounds so far. I feel bloated and absolutely disgusting (I am grateful as to WHY I am gaining weight, but concerned about possible health concerns). Is this happening to anyone else? I get nauseous but never vomit, so I find myself snacking often on crackers, etc-but not enough to gain so much weight (i think)...

Re: First Trimester Weight Gain!?

  • I dropped 4-6lbs right after I found out I was pregnant and I was feeling great, now I started getting m/s nausea but no vomiting and I've gained weight, because I'm fighting off the nausea with food. I think it's fairly normal. Just try to watch what you're eating. If you think you can stomach it try to nibble on carrots when you feel sick instead of crackers, or red peppers. Carrots, red peppers, broccoli, kiwi, any of that is super good for baby and might help you slow the weight gain. It might not look appetizing but after a few nibbles it might feel good. The nausea might be an empty belly!

I'm still down 4 lbs from when I found out that I was pregnant but I'm WAY rounder than I was. I measure my waistline and I've gained about 1/2 and inch around my belly, doesn't seem like much but jeans are unforgiving.

Best of luck! Try to make sure you're getting some light walking in too, 3-4 times a week for 30 minutes will do wonders for making you feel better!

  • Last time I gained a total of almost 50 pounds. So far I have been trying to eat a lot, but healthier items. I haven't stepped on the scale yet, I'm scared!

  • In my first pregnancy I gained 10 lbs my first trimester.  I asked my doc about it and she said to try to get more fiber in my diet and not to worry.  I ended up only gaining 30 the whole pregnancy.  Just try to eat healthy if you can and worry about it later on if it becomes an issue.

  • I have lost a total of 9 lbs but my stomach (which used to be completely flat) is super bloated/starting to get a small bump. I don't get it...

  • Last time, I gained about 10 pounds quickly in the first tri, but all gradually came off.  Pretty sure it was water weight.  In my 21 weeks, I didn't gain any weight (after that 10lbs of bloat came off).  I haven't weighed myself yet this time around.

  • Everyone gains differently! Try not to worry about it =) Make healthy food choices and exercise when you can.

  • I'm not sure if I've gained any weight yet...maybe a couple pounds...but I'm like a lot of you where I'm super bloated.  I feel like I'm eating really unhealthy because of nausea and aversion to a lot foods and smells.

  • Thanks ladies. I know that my body type gaines weight rather easily. I have been trying to stay active (about 30 min 5 days a week) and plan to maintain that level. I will try to aim on snacking on healthier options full of fiber. I think much of my gain so far is bloat (as it varies between 5-8 pounds on any given day)...there is always a chance that I gained weight from the holidays too! I know that we found out we were pregnant right after Thanksgiving and I gained a couple pounds that I couldnt lose once I got pregnant (from the holiday feasting)...so thats probably part of the problem (and we celebrated Christmas and New Years too since then)!

  • I gained all my weight really quickly. I think I was up 15 lbs by the anatomy scam at 20 weeks. Then gained another 4 by the end of 2nd tri.  I didn't gain anything during my 3rd tri. My dr was never worried about my quick gain, he said it evens out... And then wasn't concerned with my lack of weight gain during 3rd tri because DS was growing fine. I weight a bit more than I wanted to when I got pregnant so 19lbs total was a great number for me. I ended up having a 9lb, healthy kid. :)

  • I've been worried about it too! I'm 7 wks and I'm already up 4-5 pounds. Hoping that things even out now that the holidays are over and I'm away from my mom's shortbread :) I haven't had any sickness, only REALLY mild nausea, so I am grateful for that.

  • Yeah I am trying not too focus on the weight part too much and just eat healthy and exercise. So far its only been a couple of pounds, probably just bloat. I am really hoping I don't gain too much though. I'm happy the holidays are finally over though; no more yummy treats everywhere!

  • I have always gained more than the recommended 5lbs during the first trimester. It was usually from an increase in snacking to keep off nausea but also because of what I craved. For example, the only things I've been rotating between inthe last 5 days since I started getting sick (aka actually throwing up) have been cheese nachos (just shredded cheddar on chips under the broiler), cheese roll ups (shredded cheddar heated up on a tortilla and rolled up), pizza and chinese food.Definitely not healthy cravings, but they aren't so much as a craving as just the only things that don't make me dry heave. I am already about 4lbs above what I was 3 weeks ago (I'm about 6 weeks now) and I know it's not all from bloating, which I know some of it is still.

I've had 3 very different pregnancies and all have ended up within 5lbs of each other. First was not caring at all. Second was about middle ground. My third I workout out until 40w (went to 42w) and ate decently. My weigh gains were 47lbs, 43lbs and 42lbs. I decided with this one that I'm not going to stress like I did the last time. A difference of 5lbs does not matter to me that much in the end. Your body does what it needs to.

  • I am already up 5lbs and fear for the next 31 weeks! I do blame it partly on the holidays and partly on the fact that all I want to eat is cheese and dough, in the form of pizza, pasta, grilled cheese, you name it! I'd like to slow this weight gain down and not gain more than 25-30lbs total but am trying not to stresss and just enjoy the pregnancy. Being PGAL is hard enough I don't want to worry about weight too!

  • I'm passed the recommended 5 lbs for first tri already too. It doesn't help that while we were TTC (around Thanksgiving) we lived out of a hotel for 10 days and ate out for every single meal and then immediately after my BFP we moved and again were eating out every day. I gained 3 lbs all in between TTC that month and my BFP, and am up another 2-3 lbs since. It stinks! Not to mention the only things I want to eat that don't make my stomach turn are tons and tons of cheese (nachos - shredded cheese on Tostios with tons of sour cream on the side is very high on the list of cravings), ice cream, and cinnamon rolls. I'm hoping the gain slows down as the weeks keep coming!

  • I have so may of the same cravings as all of you too! LOL. Chinese, pizza, french fries, ice cream, etc. For a while, the only thing I thought I could handle eating (that the smell alone didnt make me sick) was french fries! Today I was able to eat fruit-which I love, and for the last few weeks made me slightly sick-so I am hoping things are looking up from here and the weight gain will even off and turn into a nice little baby bump soon! I really cannot wait to get out of this in-between "chubby" phase of this pregnancy! LOL

  • since the BFP my body rejects all gluten and dairy products...needless to say i dropped 5 pounds pretty quickly, now after the holidays (despite the restrictions on food) I feel I have gained at least 5....i have my appt tomorrow- so time will tell!
  • oh gosh!  this is my first pregnancy and I've already gained 6 lbs in 9 weeks! I'm hoping its water weight or something lol b/c I don't think I've been pigging out like everybody expects me to

You and I seem to be in the same boat! Although, now that I am learning how to cope with some of the nausea, I am able to workout again-which helps on so many levels. Also, a friend of mine suggested "Preggy Pops" (you can buy them at a Motherhood store if they are near you) and they help with nausea-as I was fighting nausea before with snacking on crackers, etc. We will see if these make a difference =)
