I just gave birth New Year's Day and our little baby boy has been having increasing issues with apnea and desat levels. Today he had his worst episode and had to intervene with oxygen. They tried one dose of caffeine but now are going to do a complete work up of his blood to check for sepsis. He also has jaundice which I know is pretty normal. But we are scared about this apnea. Anyone have a baby born around the 34 week mark with the same issue? What happened?
Re: Baby born at 34 weeks with apnea issues
Ours was born at 36 weeks and had apnea issues. she was able to resoolve them and I hope yours does too soon.
They had to give her oxygen a bit but the nurses and doctors said she would figure it out. what does yours say?
*hugs* to you.
I wasn't so clear but they had to give her oxygen a few times. She was only in NICU and special care for ten days. she hasn't seemed to have anymore problems at home but Ihave no way of monitoring that. I'm thinking of getting the angel pad - it's a monitoring system for breathing and heart rates I think.
Her biggest issues were eating as that took the longest but she also had heart issues.
Thanks for your reply! It makes me feel better knowing others had a similar situation. Caffeine did not seem to help.... although they only had given him one dose. They are testing for sepsis tonight and starting him on antibiotics in case results are positive for infection. If the results say there is no infection, they will do an echo on him to test for heart issues. Its scary! I literally cried myself to sleep before just because I am so scared for him.
apneas/desats in general can be normal for preemies. Both of my kids experienced them and nothing is wrong with them per say, besides having immature systems.
I hope that this is a "normal preemie issue" and not something bigger! It's good that the doctors are being cautious!
Hugs!
Congratulations on your baby! I'm sorry you are having to experience the NICU. It really sucks. :
My DD was born at 28 weeks and is 34 weeks today (yay!) and is still having desat issues. She's never had an apnea episode, but she has a few bradys few & far between (like one every three days). But, she desats on the regular, esp when her feeding is finishing.
Hopefully your son will outgrow his apnea spells quickly given his age. The unfortunate thing about the sepsis work up is it takes a few days to get all the results back for the blood cultures and/or urine cultures. The echo is completely painless and hopefully will yield good results if they have to do it! Best of luck to you & your son!
