help re: puking kid (tmi involved)

I'm going to call the drs when they are open, but for now, can you help me solve The Case of The Reoccuring Illness?  So here's a timeline:

NYE day: Sprout starts puking. I call nurse on call b/c he's not holding anything down & I start doing 1 tbsp of pedilyte ever 5-10 minute for hours & hours.  Before he goes to bed, he seems on the mend.

NY: continue with hydration in the AM with a saltine cracker every 30 min for a few hours (he was clearly hungry). Let him have toast for "lunch" and (about 24 hr from his last puke) he has couscous with chickpeas--not spiced or anything--and I think he had a piece of cornbread.  He eats quite a lot throughout the day overall just in smaller portions & not really big "meals".  And definitely carb-y foods

Monday AM: He wakes up & says "uh oh!" and there's puke in the bed.  It's unclear on whether he just did it that morning or it was in the middle of the night & he didn't wake up.  Unlike the previous times, however, this isn't a stomach emptying puke. Restart small amounts of liquids for a few hours and then, because he's begging to eat, slowly introduce crackers & toast again.

Tuesday: No episodes but continue being careful about what he's eating.

Wednesday: Convinced he's 100% better & he eats as normal.

Thursday too early in the AM: Pukes again.  3 days after the last time. Like the last early morning/middle of the night episode, it doesn't seem to be a stomach emptying puke.

I'm going to start, AGAIN, small amounts of liquid & ultimately crackers as well as call the dr.s when they open, but has anyone dealt with this before?  It's like he's all better & then we're back to square one again.  He's been out of the house twice (both times it was more than 24 hrs after last episode & he seemed to be feeling OK) & I wiped down the cart both times before he got in.  He's been eating (when he's been eating, that is) the same foods as my husband & I & we didn't get sick.  My husband & I were fine, but he's now sick although he didn't come into contact with sprout at all.

he doesn't have any other symptoms either.

  • Honestly sounds like the stomach bug we had last NYE.  We rang in the NY in the ER with DS because like Sprout he was throwing every single thing up.  We did the BRAT diet for days on end and pushed as much pedialyte as he'd take from us.  No milk products at all.  It cycled through the house to DH and then me and I ended up wiping down everything I could in the house with bleach and disinfecting toys.  You wouldn't believe the germs that breed on toys and get passed around to each other.

  • That sounds miserable. No advice, but since we were up all night with a puking kid, you have my sympathies.

  • No specific advice but there are some wretched viruses out there right now. LO has been sick since NYD and two weeks before that he and I both had a tummy bug. Now DH has a tummy bug and I have upper respiratory symptoms again. I think one, two or all of us will be sick until spring.

  • We all had a stomach bug over Christmas and C had double ear infections and a respiratory virus to boot. First he was throwing up from the stomach virus, then from a bad cough (oddly, the pedi didn't think that was such a bad thing). We also realized that milk seemed to be a puking trigger. Even a few days after his last incident, if we gave him milk he threw up. So we held off on that for another week and substituted hemp milk. Today is his first day back on regular milk in almost two weeks.
  • I hope this doesn't sound crazy and please don't take offense, I'm not comapring kids to pets, but our dog has an acid/reflux issue that caused her to throw up if she went too long between meals.  Often she'd throw up just her stomach acids first thing in the morning, and she'd refuse to eat, which just made her throw up again.  The vet had us give her pepcid at first, but we don't use it anymore  - we just make sure she eats later in the evening so her stomach isn't so empty in the morning.

Maybe try giving him some crackers before bed so his stomach has more in it overnight?

  • Hopefully the pedi can help but my only advice would be to avoid all dairy for at least a week.  Maggie had been sick once like that then was all better for a few days so I gave her her morning milk two days later then we went to Little Gym - BIG mistake.  I had to call DH who was home with newborn Molly to bring both of us new clothes while I hid out in the Little Gym bathroom trying to clean up both up.  One nice mom passed along her whole thing of wipes for me.
  • About a year ago, this was DD1.  Very low grade fever (never higher than 100) and random vomitting, no diarrhea.  Went on for about 4 or 5 days.  She'd get better, we'd feed her, everything would be fine for almost a day, then random vomitting again.  We thought it was a stomach bug.  Took her to the ER on a Sat because she was starting to act out of it.  Turns out it was strep.

  • thanks ladies. i've got an appt with the pedi today & I'll definitely be taking y'all's advice on no dairy for a least a week & sanitizing all his toys no matter what she says!

I'm very fortunate in that he's been in daycare (well, part-time) for about 9 months & has only been sick twice. Unfortunately both those times have been stomach bugs and if there's one thing I really can't deal with it's vomit.  I just really, REALLY want this to go away for everyone's sake! (luckily husband is feeling better this morning)

  • i just got back from the dr. & she said she's been seeing a really bad stomach bug that is bad for 3-5 days, but lasts about a week & can have episodes reoccuring for several weeks.  YUCK!

So, everyone try to keep clear of this!
