3rd Trimester

nursing bras and tanks

Well, I'm the first to admit I'm very naive about all this baby stuff (my friends found it just hilarious when I asked what a swaddling blanket was). I've been trying to finalize my overnight bag for the hospital and have been reading through all the posts about what to pack and I keep seeing nursing bras, nursing tanks, nipple cream, etc. Okay, I know I need nipple cream (any advice on what brand is best?) but the nursing bras and tanks, I just don't get how they work! My MIL actually gave me a nursing top for my bday that I was just wearing as a regular maternity top, so I know it has that little extra panel of fabric in there, but I don't really get how it works? Can someone explain to me how to use these things? lol

Re: nursing bras and tanks

  • Different shirts have different designs, but I'm guessing that the one you have just stretches down underneath the breast and the other extra piece of fabric covers the top of the breast so that there's minimum exposure during nursing.  Most nursing bras work on the same basic principal (but again, lots of different designs).

  • For the cream, I always use Lansinoh lanolin.  And only buy one - a little goes a LONG way with lanolin.  I've never used up a tube.

Nursing bras and tanks are designed to give easy access during BFing.  So the bras usually have a little clasp right where the cup meets the straps and you can unhook it to pull the cup down (basically accessing your boob without having to remove the bra).  Tanks are similar and are designed in lots of different ways.  Nursing tops also are designed in a variety of ways.  Some are cross-over and low cut so you just pull your boob out (wear a nursing tank under it if you feel it's too low cut).  Some have an extra panel that looks as though it's a tank layer underneath but really you can access your breast through the side where the underlayer is not connected to the overlayer.  If you browse nursing tops and tanks on Motherhood Maternity or other sites, they usually have one or two pictures showing you how you access the breast for BFing.

    Hope that helps!

  • I'm getting the Lansinoh cream and the Gillian O'Malley nursing tanks from target (+ a few nursing sleep bras).  Waiting for real nursing bras after baby is born.

  • On #4 here... my favorite thing to do is wear a spaghetti tank under all my regular shirts. I pull the top shirt up and pull the tank down at the top that way your stomach and back are still covered while nursing and not hanging out. The nursing shirts have always been more hassle and if you are a milk machine like me your milk may come out faster then baby can drink leaving you with a soaking wet shirt. At least if the tank gets wet, the shirt on top is still dry and it won't look like you are leaking everywhere. You will figure what works out best for you! I agree Lansinoh Lanolin is the best!! Le Leche League recommends it!
