for those who bathe their LOs together

My boys are 13mo and we have transitioned from infant tub to blow up tub and now to bath seats. Well, we've run into a problem- no one wants to stay seated anymore! (surprise)

If you bathe your children together, at what age did you just let them have free reign of the tub? Do you just use a non-slip mat on the tub floor?

  • We just recently stopped with the seats too. We have a large no-slip mat but everyone still wants to stand up. Frustrating, but we keep sotting them back down. If they refuse after several attempts, bath time is over. Fortunately they sit long enough initially to get them clean. Then they get rowdy. It's been tough but for a little while they just splash and laugh.

  • we STILL use seats.  DH does bath time and he wants to keep using them- though i think it's silly to still use them... but he likes that it keeps Gray in one spot - and Gibby actually WANTS to use it - the other night he was crying when DH had not put the front of the seat on - i think it makes him feel secure in the water. (they are 2.5yo)

  • We switched from the infant tub to them just laying on their bellies in a few inches of water around 6 months old.  From there we slowly added a little more water as they could sit up better and better.
  • We never had bath seats, we just went straight to the tub.  I would wash everyone real quick and then let them play.  I give one warning for standing up, after that I'll take LO out of the tub.  They love bath time, so they learned really quickly.

  • I put a towel in the bottom of the tub.  It gave them traction to move around and worked awesome.  I tried a nonslip mat, but it was super slippery.  If I could keep a hand on them, I was okay with them standing up, but I made sure to wash everyone right away and quickly, in case things got out of control, everyone just came out of the tub!
  • I bathe all three together & just a few weeks ago I put away the bath seats. I was worried they would fall all over the place & get hurt but so far it's been pretty good. I put my DD in the middle to keep the boys from fighting over the same toy as much.

  • We used bath seats until a couple months ago (around 18 months) and switched to a towel at the bottom of the tub.  We just stopped using that last week and it went fine.  Like pp's said, when they stand up, bath time is over.  So far they don't start that until toward the end of bath time anyway.  It's so nice not to have anything to dry off/out after!
  • we have a rubber non-slip mat that covers the whole bottom of the tub. And we let them stand up and walk around. No injuries yet.

  • yeah we had/have that problem. we just were/are diligent about telling them to sit back down (at that age you physically have to sit them down). They got a warning and if they did it again they were evacuated from tub. at 13 months its a hard concept to grasp and some baths only lasted 5 minutes but they know now that they sit down or they are out.

So for that reason I soap them up as soon as they get in and then they can play. Playtime lasts as long as they follow the rules.

  • When we took away the bath seats, around 12 months old, we had to start bathing them seperately.  They were just too crazy.  We have established pretty good habits over the last couple of months and now I'm starting to put them back together.  They usually sit back down when I ask them to now and I try not to stress over it when they won't listen and just get them out as quick as possible if they are being unruley.

  • I used a seat that they weren't strapped into until about 4 months when they were both rolling regularly. After that I'd just fill the tub with 2" of water and lay them on their backs. Now that they sit unassisted I fill it 1/4 of the way an let them crawl/splash :)
  • As soon as mine could sit up on their own (around 8 months) i put them in a regular full sized bath tub. I never used a mat, however.
