This is a XP from the Working Mom's board:
My DH and I have been invited to a wedding of a good friend of his in Ireland at the end of June, at which point DS#2 will be 10 months old (please forgive the fact that I haven't updated my tickers, I just haven't had time).
I EBF'ed DS#1 for 6 months and then had to
start supplementing with about a bottle of formula a day. By 9 months I
was completely tapped out and it was an enormous (and increasingly
futile) battle to try to get him to take the breast, so we stopped.
Nursing #1 was a struggle all along and it has been easier this time, so
I was hoping to nurse to DS#2's first birthday. But for all I know my
drop-off in supply and his decline in interest will follow a similar
pattern.
But let's assume the nursing continues to go well. If we go to this wedding, I don't think we can go for fewer than 5 days and even that seems incredibly short for a trip to Europe. I don't particularly want to bring the baby for a host of reasons and definitely don't want to bring both boys (just way too expensive for starters). So here are my questions:
a) is there any reasonably-priced way to ship BM from Europe back to the states? Would I need to do this every other day I'm away, or would I ship it back all at once?
b) do you think my supply would take a major hit from pumping and not nursing at that point?
c) do you think DS#2 will loose interest in the breast after 5 days, particularly if it was already waning?
I've always wanted to go to Ireland - I just wish this wedding were being held after #2 turns 1!
Re: Anyone travel internationally while nursing?
I'm confused why you would have to ship the milk? I would just pump regularly and dump while you're away. I guess you could also freeze it if you are staying somewhere with a freezer and then pack it frozen with ice and take home but that seems awfully ccomplicated! Good luck!
