2nd Trimester

how many ultrasounds have you had?

Okay, so I realized recently that I don't think a single baby, complication free pregnancy has ultrasounds every 4 weeks like I do. (after the next one it will be every 2 weeks).

so how many ultrasounds are you/will you have in your entire pregnancy?

Re: how many ultrasounds have you had?

  • I have had zero so far. I have my 20 week coming up, and provided all goes well, that will be my only one.

I had only 1 with DS, and two with DD (the second one was simply b/c DD was too active at the 20 week to get all the measurements).

  • I've had one every appt so far except my 6 week confirmation appt, but had one at 8 weeks, 12, 16 and 20. The 8 week and 20 week were full ultrasounds with the ultrasound tec(separate appt) and then the 12 and 16 my dr gave. He calls them sneak peaks, they last about a minute. Just let me take a quick glimpse to see her. If I want one, and ask, my dr will give the sneak peak.

  • Just the one anatomy scan at 20 weeks.  I am with a midwife group that is low intervention.  There is just no reason for constant ultrasounds except for billing your insurance.
  • I've had 3 so far, including my NT scan.  But due to a low protein on the NT results I'll be going in for a scan every 6 weeks from now on.  While it's great to see the baby I would rather have had a complication free pregnancy.
  • So far just two. Dating at 7 weeks and then NT at 12 weeks. I know I'll be having my a/s at 20 weeks and no idea if I'll have more after.

  • lurking a little, will be in my second tri very soon.  I have had three so far, have my NT scan on Monday 1/9, will have an a/s scan at 20 weeks.  My OB likes to check me out frequently because I convieved with an IUD, and I have a fibroid.  So far everything is a-okay, and I don't mind all the extra pictures.  They have the machine in my OB's office so it is not an inconvience for me.

I have NT scan on the 9th, then reg. appointment on the 24th, so I will be curious to see if my OB takes a peak again in the office on the 24th.

  • Second one tomorrow, had one @22 wks and it was discovered that I have complete placenta pervia. Have to back tomorrow to check if it went where it's suppose to be. If not then I will have to go have a c-section.
  • Zero so far. I will have my first (and only, if all goes well) at 20 weeks. I am in Canada so unless they are medically necessary, my province does not do any more.

  • One. Just the NT.  I have my anatomy scan at 19 wks, and that's it for me! My sister has been getting the dildo cam at all of hers, I think ( not high risk). Every dr is different.

  • My practice has a little laptop u/s in the office to use for stubborn babies who don't like the doppler heart monitor.  So, I had one at 8 weeks during my first appt, one at 12 weeks when she wouldn't let us hear her heartbeat, the 15 week NT scan on the big machine, 18 weeks when she was stubborn in the office again, 19 week A/S scan, and I think that's it because she's big enough that the doppler doesn't have a problem picking it up anymore :).  So 5, but 3 were little ones.

  • With DS I had complications (pre-e) and only had 2. One that was for my anatomy scan and one at 31 1/2 weeks for a growth ultrasound.

With this one I've only had one, and that was at 18w2d for the anatomy. I suspect I'll have a growth ultrasound at around 31-33 weeks again...because I've already been diagnosed with PIH and it may or may not turn into pre-e.

  • I've had 8 or 9 so far.  I did IVF, so I had 2 early u/s.  I then had one at 10 weeks because my OB practice does one when you start seeing them.  I then had a bunch because of bleeding issues.  I did not do an NT scan.  But, I did an anatomy scan at 18w6d.  Due to a blood condition that can cause IUGR and other issues, I get my first growth scan next week and will have them every 4 weeks.  They will get more frequent near the end of my pregnancy and I will likely start NSTs among other things at that time.

  • So far I've had three. One at my first, I was 7w0d. The second at my 10w appt. And my third was my N/T scan. I have an appt next week and I will have another at that appt as well.
  • I had a dating ultrasound, NT scan at 13wks and the anatomy scan at 18wks, so three.

My SIL gets one every time she goes in but it's also covered under her insurance. I know plenty of people who get one every time they go in as well just because it's there. At my office I have to schedule a separate appointment for u/s.

I am thinking of asking for one at 30 weeks though.  Not sure if I can go half of pregnancy w/o seeing baby!

  • Just two. Dating u/s at 10.5 weeks and A/S at 18 weeks. I don't anticipate any more this pregnancy unless something needs to be re-checked from my A/S or something comes up later in pregnancy.

With my first I had 6: an u/s at 10 weeks in the ER (went in for non-stop puking/dehydration) when they couldn't find the hb on a doppler, 12.5 week dating u/s from my OB, initial a/s at 19 weeks then a follow-up at 20 weeks to get an additional measurement and then one at 28 weeks to check on the status of my placenta previa. I also had a quick one at 36 weeks to confirm she was head down.

With my 2nd I had 4: a dating u/s at 9 weeks, the NT scan around 12.5 weeks, a/s at 19 weeks and then one to check my cervix at 32 weeks since I'd had an increase in pressure and contractions and they wanted to make sure everything looked good and closed up.

  • I had one at 6w3d following spotting (everything was fine).  I'll have the A/S at 20 weeks.  Had it not been for the spotting, I would have only had one, as that's all my insurance pays for.

  • I've had 5 - One at 6 weeks, one at 8 to see if a hematoma disappeared, one at 10 after being admitted to the hospital for dehydration, one when I came back to the US and had a new OB, and one at 20 weeks. I don't think mine was routine, though because my OB in Guatemala had a policy that he did an ultrasound every visit... probably just to bill my insurance. They have a "white people are rich. Take their money" mentality in the town we lived in. We also paid for the first 3 out of pocket and the ones in the US are covered by insurance. I'm glad to look at baby any chance I get, though!

  • I've had 8 so far. I'll get 1 more every 2 weeks until 3rd trimester and then they'll be weekly.
  • Wow that often? I've only had 2 (the dating and the AS), and unless something happens or my MWs decide that I need more, I'm pretty sure that I'm done. I do wish that I had more, just because they're so much fun, but I guess it'll be nice not to have to pay (unfortunately, the ones here are pretty costly).

  • interesting, my twins are sharing a placenta, and therefore I have frequent ultrasounds to check for possible growth discrepancies. I've probably had like 6 u/s so far and will start going more frequently soon.

  • I've had 9 so far.  Through the pregnancy I'll have closer to 30.  I'm high risk for numerous reasons.

  • Probably 2. NT scan and a/s.

I had three with DS. Six with DD, but three were for monitoring at 41+ weeks.

My friend gets one at every appointment. She isn't high risk or anything. It is just what her OB does.

  • You are going to have to have an ultrasound ever 2 weeks with no health issues? that seems odd to me. I have had Type 1 diabetes for 16 years and I am considered a high risk pregnancy and I am having an ultrasound every 4 weeks, and that is because I have health issues. It is nice to see baby alot, but twice a month with no issues for you or baby seems odd.

  • I've had 2 + 1 elective.  I had my first (at doctor) at 9w6d and then I had the elective at 14w2d and my a/s at 19w6d.
