Did you do anything to PT at night?

Or did it just happen naturally as they got older?  DD has been potty trained during the day for almost a year now.  At night she's in a pull up, but almost every morning she still wakes up wet.  We tried for about a week in underwear at night, and explained to her that she needs to wake mommy up if she needs to go potty.  But she kept having accidents every night, so we gave up.  Her mattress was supposed to have a removable, washable cover on it but lucky us- the one we got has a broken zipper and can't be removed.  I'm afraid to allow her too many accidents or else it'll be ruined and smell like pee forever!  We limit her fluids before bedtime, and she always goes potty right before bed.  Is there anything else we should be doing to help her along?  Or is this just something that comes with age and maturity?

  • Age and maturity.  DD has been day trained for 2 years and still wets the bed at night about 50% of the time.  She is slowly getting better about getting up to go or holding it.

I would buy a cheap plastic cover or waterproof mattress pad for her mattress if you are going to try going without pull ups.

  • Yes but not until she was consistently waking up dry on her own and we were wasting pull ups. Then we started a sticker chart, she got a sticker on it every time she woke up dry and if she filled the chart she got to go to TRU and pick out any thing she wanted. It only took a few weeks and 1 accident before the chart was filled and we were on our way to TRU and I think she has only had maybe one accident since. You can get a waterproof mattress pad at Target for pretty cheap.

  • I expect it's something that comes with maturity (ie. as their body matures); this is why they make pull ups or 'good nights' for older kids.

When we PTd DS this past summer we didn't worry about night time training and had him in pull ups. DH and I have started to notice that he wakes up to pee at night and wakes up dry most mornings. When we run out of pull ups we'll try him in undies at night and see how it goes.

  • No. DD just started waking up with a dry diaper. Once she had been doing that for about 6 weeks, we ditched the diaper. She had a grand total of three accidents after that and all were related to major things (teething, being sick and the first time I went away overnight since she was born).

  • It's a developmental thing, there's nothing you can do to train for it. Ds literally went from soaking a size 7 overnight diaper lined with a men's incontinent pad, to being bone dry on waking. He's been that way since mid-November. He does NOT wake up to go (he never has even once), it has developed bladder control to be able to hold it all night. As soon as he started waking up dry, he started asking to wear underwear so we let him. He's has two accidents purely because he couldn't hold it long enough and he doesn't wake to go (not developmentally ready yet). We have a cheap waterproof mattress topper (it goes on like a fitted sheet) that we got from Walmart for like $6. It works great.

  • DS potty trained around 28 months.  When he turned 3 he refused to wear a diaper at night anymore.  He was still waking up with a wet diaper.  We gave it a try and he has only had one accident since. He was just ready - he does wake up once a night to go potty usually.

  • My DS is 4.5 and has been day trained for almost two years.  He sleeps deeply for 11 hours a night and does not wake up.  His diaper is soaked in the morning.  His pediatrician says it's completely normal.
  • We ditched the pull up on December 31st. DD had been day trained for a little shy of 6 months, but I was told by a friend that a general rule of thumb is that when they can go one week without any overnight peeing thats when you can ditch the diaper.

We are still accident free although DD cried yesterday because she wanted to wear a pull up to bed and mommy was mean and told her no because she is now a very big girl.

  • Thanks everyone!  We'll just keep giving it time.

It's an Ikea mattress, so we've had trouble finding a mattress protector that would fit it.  I bought a small, rectangular-shaped mattress protector online that had a plastic backing, but she had an accident and it still leaked through to the mattress.   But I was just looking at Ikea's website and saw that they sell a mattress protector, I'll have to go try that one out.

  • We are just having DS wear pull ups at night.  He is still waking up wet.  He has only woken up dry a handful of times.  I honestly think it will just come with age.  He has woken up a few times and gone pee on his own, but it's rare.  I would just give it time.

  • Age and maturity. However, I did put his underwear on and then a pull-up OVER the underwear at night. Thay way he could feel it and know he didn't like his underwear to get wet, but it didn't get out of the pull-up. Bonus, if he stayed dry at night I could re-use the pull-up the next night (since it wasn't actually touching his skin.) It was probably just a combination of age and maturity all at once since he refused to be PT'ed until 2 months shy of his 4th birthday, but this worked like a charm for us.
    Happy 4th birthday!

  • My oldest is 5 and STILL wears a pull-up at night.  She sees a pediatric urologist because she had recurring UTIs at age 3 and at our last visit 6 months ago he said he wasn't really worried that she still can't get through the night without wetting the bed.

My 3 year old potty trained herself (because of the issues we had with her sister I said I would keep her in diapers until she was absolutely ready).  She was completely PT within 3 weeks.  Guess it just depends on the child.

  • Just happened naturally.  DS did wear pull-ups for a while, but in the morning they were dry.  We then switched to regular undies, and he had 2 accidents, but for about 3-4 months now, hes been dry every morning.

  • I agree w/ pps. It's a developmental thing.

DD1 potty trained herself, daytime, when she was 2yrs 4 months. She would wake up with a FULL diaper in the morning, so I wasn't about to attempt nighttime PTing.

Up until about a month ago, she would still wake up with a full pull-up, sometimes even leaking out she peed so much at night.

The week before Xmas, she decided she was done w/ pull ups at night, went to bed in underwear and has been fine ever since. She's had 2 accidents in 3+ week, and both were in the beginning. FWIW, she will be 4 in a month...so nighttime PT happened a year and a half after daytime PT.

ETA: DD doesn't wake up to go either. I think that's why those accidents happen. She just holds it all night.

  • DS has been pee trained for a year and still needs a pull up for nap and night times. From what I have read you can't teach or push this, so I am not worried about it for now. He expresses interest in wearing undies to bed, but I need to see that he can wake up dry first.
