VBAC

To VBAC or to not VBAC...

I was told by my doctor that I am a candidate for a VBAC. They gave me practically a book on all of the risks involved, and it really freaked me out, so I told them I would just do the c-section again. I have my doctors appointment in 3 weeks to schedule my c-section and now I am having second thoughts! With my son I was induced because I was 42 weeks pregnant. After being in the hospital for 2 days they made me have a c-section because he had the cord wrapped around his neck, and I only made it to 5 cm! All I know is I want a healthy baby girl, but I just can't decide how!

Re: To VBAC or to not VBAC...

  • I guess it depends on what you want for your birth. I don't know what info they gave you, but from what I know, the risks of a repeat cesarean are worse and more common than those of a VBAC. There is some good info here:

Hope this helps. and good luck to you and your babe, whatever route you take!

  • There are many risks to c/s too.  You need to make yourself aware of those as well.

I can tell you from experience that recovery from a VBAC was 100x easier than from my c/s.  I would never choose surgery if it wasn't medically necessary.

Ditto this.  It is a personal decision which way you want to go, but no doctor is pro VBAC if they only gave you the risks of a VBAC but failed to educate you on the risks of a RCS and major surgery in general.  When I was pregnant with my second, I was given a form with the risks of both listed side-by-side.  I obviously chose VBAC but I was just happy to have a provider that recognized that there were risks either way.

  • I agree with everyone else, that it doesn't sound like your provider is particularly supportive of VBAC, but it's probably also worth asking them more questions about VBAC at your next appointment. I'd imagine that you can ask to postpone scheduling your c-section then, too. And if they give you the run-around about VBAC, it might also be worth looking for and interviewing a new provider.

ICAN is a national group, they can help you find a local provider (if you want to switch): https://ican-online.org/chapter/search

VBAC or a RCS are both reasonable choices. I don't regret attempting and having a VBAC at all. One of the reasons I decided to attempt it is because I'm not comfortable with the risks of 3+ c-sections (though we're still undecided if we want a third kid). Good luck deciding!

  • You don't have to decide right now.  There's really no reason to schedule your c/s at 25w anyway.  I'd do some more research, talk to your OB, decide whether an induced VBAC is an option for you or if you have to go into labor on your own by a certain point for your OB to be ok with a VBAC, etc.

  • I agree with all PPs.  Both VBAC and RCS have risks as do FTM who go into labor naturally.  I would encourage you to talk to your doctors about the risks of a RCS (as it is major surgery) and also research yourself into pros/cons of both.

I just watched the movie "The Business of Being Born" that had a lot of good facts and information in it regarding the risks of RCS/VBAC and medical interventions as well as talking about risks of other medications used during labor.

Get as much information as you can and decide for yourself what you think is the best decision for you.

I had a c/s with DS and am planning on a VBAC with DS#2.
