Random new diaper policy

So I was talking to the prenatal coordinator today and she said to bring diapers and pads to the hospital with us. Apparently they limit you to 6 of each now because people would stuff them in their bags and then say they ran out and needed more while they were in the hospital - then they would pull the same thing with different nurses so they were stocked up when they left. How crazy is that? I'm sort of p!ssed that they ruined this for the honest people...

Re: Random new diaper policy

  • I totally did that with the crotch ice packs.  I'd ask every nurse TWICE to get me a take-home bag with them.

  • That really sucks. I took home my extras, but I didn't ever ask for extra and pretend we were out. I didn't know that you were allowed to take all that stuff, but my mom made sure I grabbed everything.
i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.
  • This totally sucks!  I was given a remaining package of preemie diapers after my first twins were born, I was super thankful they even gave them to us, but they said that hopefully they would be in NB by the time we finished the package.  I didn't have preemie diapers bought before hand since we didn't know when they were going to be born.  I'm not bringing my own diapers to the hospital unless they tell me to.....for what the hospital costs are you would think they add that ontop of the bill too!

  • Our hospital is talking about doing this as well. People take ridiculous amounts of stuff. I won't be bringing anythign with me tho, I won't be taking exrta but I know they wouldn't let me (or anyone else really) go without.

  • My hospital is really annoying like that - we have to take in pretty much EVERYTHING - pads for me, diapers, diaper cream... they give you a long list when you go on the tour. I'm not impressed - with the amount of money it costs, I'd hope not to have to worry about getting all the little bits and pieces.

  • The hospital charged us for all the stuff that was opened and brought into the room, so I don't see why asking for extras would be an issue. As far as I know (we go on a tour in March so DS can see where mommy and daddy are going to be), our hospital still provides unlimited diapers/pads, since they are charging you for it.

  • That's so weird... At the hospital I'm delivering at they start every room out with a brand new package of diapers and once they are opened, if you don't take them, they toss them... And if you need more, they'll give them. As for pads, they give you a ton in the first place and if you end up needing more they can supply those too.. I'm pretty sure those items are in the charges on the hospital bill... So it's weird that they wouldn't have enough.

  • I've had a few people who've had babies tell me that even since this new "6-only policy" they still took home the opened package because otherwise it was a hygenic/infection-risk issue and the hosp would just throw the unopened diapers out...so I'm not sure why we were told that today. Oh well, I'll be prepared and just see what happens.

In terms of the bill - remember I am in Canada so we don't pay anything out of pocket...so this could also be a cost-cutting measure on the part of our healthcare system, too.

  • Maybe the packages have 6 diapers in them??

Also, they might not give you a whole "package".  They might just give you your 6 and keep the "package" somewhere else.  That isn't a contamination risk.  I mean, if you go to the ER and need a diaper, they give you one.  One that was never in your room.  You don't get a whole bunch.

  • I work in a hospital, and I have never heard of this. When people would ask me for extra diapers or formula, I would just give it to them -what do I care?  The hospital charges a lot of money for a hospital stay, what is a pack or 2 of diapers in regards to this cost?

Our hospital tour did not mention this, and we will not be bringing any diapers or pads along.  We will be there for 4 days due to a c-section, so 6 pads/ diapers would definitely not suffice.
