As I posted below in the first year check in, my DS loathes the infant seat with everything in his tiny little body. We are seriously considering buying a convertible seat this weekend. I need some advice and recs, please.
- If your DC hated the infant seat, did they do better in the convertible?
- I have a CR-V, can I keep the convertible seat in the center? I'm sure I can look this up in my manual, but I don't have it with me, plus I'm curious what any other CR-V owners have done.
- We'll definitely take him with us to shop and put him in the seats to make sure there isn't a screaming fit. Can I try the seats in my car before buying? Sometimes he is OK in the infant seat until he gets in the car. I don't know if it's the incline, seat position, or maybe being backwards. I always sit in the back with him.
- Rec your convertible seat, please. I'd prefer not to break the bank, but if he will be happy in the seat I almost don't care what it costs.
Re: Convertible Car Seats
Adawg went through the exact same thing for a few weeks around 5 months. It was AWFUL. I finally came to the conclusion that, because she was more aware of her surroundings, she was getting a little car sick. We got one of those toys you put on the handle of the seat and that distracted her a little. One day, she just stopped screaming. I want to say the phase lasted for about three weeks.
Now she cries because she gets bored or lonely and she's dropped her toy. When she does this I have to sing to her and she calms right down. I recorded some songs on my phone and play them for her on the way home.
All that to say that he might grow out of it, and then you can still use your infant seat for when he falls asleep and you want to bring him inside for a few more minutes of a nap. A doesn't see a difference in her bigger convertable at all, so I am not sure it will make a difference for your boy.
A hated riding in the car until about 4-5 months. She would scream her blood head off regardless of what I did. Since we never really used the bucket seat other than in the car (we never took it out) I decided to get a convertible to see if she would be more comfortable since she would be more upright and might be able to see more. We got a britax boulevard. My car only has latch on the sides so it is installed behind the passanger seat with latch. If your car has latch in the middle you can put the convertible in with latch in the middle. If there isn't latch in the middle you can use the seat belt. We just felt like we could get the seat in tighter using latch so we went with that. She did much better riding in the car after we switched. I dont know if it was the seat or her just getting older but I have no complaits about the britax. If you shop around you can usually get a good deal on a britax.
We recently bought another convertible so we would have one for each car. I was just going to buy another britax but a friend recommended the diono line (used to be sunshine kids). It is pricey but it goes RF, then FF and then converts to a booster seat. The expiration date is 8 years! It was a little harder to install but I like it. It reclines a little more than the britax (even with the angle adjuster) but it is a much narrower seat so there is more room in the back of my car. It also had a cup holder with DD is in love with. I've only had it for a couple of days but so far it is great. I'm hoping that this seat will last quite awhile!
MrsT, thanks, I will check out both of those. I don't mind moving him to the side, I think, but prefer the middle if I can. I'll check the LATCH.
LL - Sadly, this started the day he turned 6 weeks. I kept waiting, thinking he would eventually grow out of it. It hasn't happened yet and at this point I'm not sure that it will. Sigh. I got a toy thing that attached to the bar and that works sometimes. I think it's just when he figures out he doesn't like it, nothing will satisfy him until he is out. I like the song idea though, he loves to be sung to so I'll definitely record my awesome singing voice for him.
