Breastfeeding

working moms and breastfeeding

Hello ladies! I am soon to be a FTM and will be transitioning to only working 8-5 on Mondays and Wednesday in the office and the other three days working at home.

I work for a small company (less than 20 people) so we do not fall under FMLA or any maternity/pumping regulations. However accommodating my employer is, the office is one giant room with cubicles and one bathroom.

There is no way I am able to block off use of the bathroom in the middle of the office during the day to have pumping sessions and there are physically no other rooms in the office.

I need tips on how to breastfeed my LO if I cannot pump two days a week but am home the other three days. Help?

Re: working moms and breastfeeding

  • can you use a nursing cover and go pump in your car?

  • My pump (Medela PISA) has a car adapter...maybe you could take a couple of breaks during the day and go pump in your car? Not ideal, but maybe one solution.

  • Can you get some kind of fold up partition to block off your cubicle with a "busy, come back later" sign or something?

I like the idea of pump in the car, they make a/c adapters.

  • I never thought about pumping from my car. Seems odd though considering our parking lot looks into the office and no blinds on the windows. Definitely a consideration though.

  • I'd pump in the car with a nursing cover.  I do it all the time when we travel, just get an adapter.  And I'd go ahead and tell people, being it's a small office and all.  Or at least your boss.  I know it's none of anyone's business, but I think it's common courtesy to let them know that you'll be unavailable for a certain amount of time everyday and when.

  • My old boss told me that if we couldn't find a place for me to pump to let him know that I need to use his office and he'd step out so I could have privacy. Could that be another option for you?

It's definitely courtesy to let people know when you'll be unavailable.

I'm a teacher, so it's a little different for me... But, my supervisor, principal, and coteachers know when I am not available for meetings. We had a power outage at school one day and I was SO glad I had the car adapter or I wouldn't have been able to pump that day! I have a PT job, and I pump in my van there because there isn't a clean, private place to pump. I keep a book in my pump bag -- I set an alarm on my phone so I don't lose track of time and read while I pump.

Not that this matters in your situation b/c of the physical layout of the office, I don't think FMLA has anything to do with this. It's all about the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Affordable Care Act (the new health care bill).
