Remind me, at what temp you are supposed to get really worried?

Gracie just hit 105.2 on the temporal and I freaked. I did a rectal temp and it was 103.8. I left a message for the doc, but I am wondering if I should be freaking more right now?

Re: Remind me, at what temp you are supposed to get really worried?

  • I would be. My pedi says to worry about a fever when it has hit 104.

  • is this pre or post ibuprofen? if you haven't already, go ahead and give her so ibuprofen and get that fever down while you wait for the doc to call you back.

  • I would put her in a lukewarm bath and try to bring her fever down that way and with medicine. If that doesn't work, I'd get her to a doc. (just speaking as a mom - I'm not a doctor or nurse)

  • She had a dose of Motrin at noon, so it is a little soon for more. I will put her in the bath now. Poor baby, she is miserable. I hope they call me ASAP.
  • That's high enough for me to be concerned.  I'd give Ibuprofen and cool rag on her neck while waiting to hear back.

I think you can give Tylenol as well.  Poor baby! :(

  • My daughter is notorious for very high temps(in the 104/105 range). The key is whether or not they come down after giving Tylenol and Motrin plus a warm bath. When temps reach that high, you need to keep alternating Tylenol and motrin to keep them down. Some viruses just run a high fever but it could also be a bladder infection, ear infection or something else causing the high temp. My pedi likes to see us if it's over 104 and if it doesn't go down with Tylenol and motrin or if she becomes lethargic, unresponsive, etc... If it does go down but lasts longer than 48 hours then I take her in. I usually like to ride out fevers and let the body fight whatever it is but I don't mess around with fevers over 104. Do you know about alternating the medicine? Dr sears has some great info for getting a high fever down stat. Good luck...it's never fun.
  • At the doc now, they just did a strep and a flu test neither are fun. Update: both tests were negative and we were sent home to treat the fever. Poor baby had to go thru all of that for nothing.
  • A true fever is above 100.4 and you should be concerned or getting a checkup at 103 or higher, especially if it's not responding to Tylenol or Motrin or other relief measures. You can alternate Tylenol & Motrin together. Some viruses in children can just be really bad - RSV, flu, and the super common ear infection. I think it's always good to trust your gut on these & it's good you took her to be checked out. I hope she feels better soon!
