updates: For those who stopped swaddling...

How did you do it? Did you quit cold turkey or did you gradually stop? How long did it take LO to adjust?Baby Birthday Ticker TickerBaby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • Cold turkey.  DS scooted himself all the way down into is miracle blanket up to his eyes.  It scared the $hit out of me and we stopped then and there.  I guess he was about 3 months?  He adjusted well and actually started sleeping well without it.

    Good luck!

  • cold turkey.

DD never liked being swaddled.  I wonder if she would sleep more soundly if she was still swaddled but she seems happier with being able to have her hands up by her face

  • When you stopped did they still whack themselves in the face? I tried to stop after the miracle blanket issue like above, but ended up switching to the halo sleepsack.
  • Cold turkey.  DD was 6.5 months (4 months adjusted).  She was breaking out of her swaddle and waking herself up every hour, so we decided to stop swaddling.  The first night was ROUGH!  But she quickly adjusted and is back to waking only once a night.  It helps for her to sleep on her side with a lovey (she can roll over now and we have a video monitor so I don't worry much).

  • We're going cold turkey.  DD is grown out of miracle blanket leg pouch and can now work her hands out of all kinds of swaddles.  We're going to switch to the halo sleep sack or other warm one.  We're doing at same time as sleep training since it didn't really work to slowly wean the swaddle.
  • We are about to stop along with sleep training as well, per the pedi. Have to stop the swaddle because of rolling.

I am concerned that sleep training is not the solution to the face rubbing that is happening, which is what wakes him up and keeps him awake if I put him down unswaddled. Truth is, I don't really have a problem nursing to sleep since he only wakes up once.

But I don't have a better idea to keep him from rubbing his face at night then to let him figure it out. Which apparently needs to involve sleep training. I am not sure whether staying in the room (as per Sleep Lady Shuffle) would even make a difference for him vs. leaving and checking/soothing at intervals.

  • I am DREADING this!  I know in the next couple months we're going to have to stop swaddling Lily and she is such a light sleeper and constantly bops herself in the head with her crazy arms!  During naps... I'm lucky if I can get 30mins out of her before she either digs her fingers in her face or smacks herself.  Oye vay!  =(

  • We did it off and on. DD would break out of her swaddle from about 1 month on. Around 3 months we started just leaving her arms out, but occasionally if she was having a really hard time getting to sleep, or kept waking up I would swaddle her back up. It's kind of weird...I think she likes to be swaddled, because it calms her, but she's always trying to get out of it. Little stinker. Smile

  • cold turkey from the halo sleepsack.  yes, she did smack herself in the face for a few days, doesn't as often now.

  • We did it cold turkey at the same time we did sleep training.  One arm out never worked for us.  My LO would scratch at her face so I thought it was going to be a nightmare.  But she was fine after the first night and now she loves to sleep on her side!

  • I am shocked by how many people were able to go cold turkey, good for you! We were not so lucky. First I bought a Magic Sleep Suit and it was terrible, he clearly was not ready, and still sleeping amazingly in the swaddle at that time, and was no where close to rolling. Then he became obsessed with trying to roll, even in his sleep, and the the 4MW or whatever hit, and sleep was terrible in general, but the swaddle was just making him mad. So we started doing 1 arm out at naps around 4 months, at the advice of his Dr., thinking it would not affect my sleep as much. Then we went back to the magic sleep suit at night, since his night sleep was crap anyways. I didn't do the sleepsuit at the time in the day since ours was getting small and annoying. He was capable of doing 8 hours some nights with the sleep suit, so I knew then that any crappy nights we had were not the issue of swaddle or no swaddle. After a week or so of 1 arm out for naps, I put him in a sleep sack for naps with a lovey, to help his "crazy arm" (the one that had still been swaddled lol). Since then I have gotten a new bigger sleep suit and have been using it for naps too. Naps have become better recently, so again, know any night problems have to do with other issues.

It was a long month for us, definitely not cold turkey, but gradual seemed to have worked for us. Good luck!

  • Formatting on my phone sucks so it wouldn't let me update my op. Anyway, I decided to stop swaddling DD cold turkey last night and she did great! She seemed to like having her arms out. Now if she can just learn how too self soothe next! (fingers crossed)Baby Birthday Ticker TickerBaby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Cold turkey here too. First night wasn't too bad and after that she was back to STTN.
