I got goosebumps reading this. This girl is extremely brave and I think she did the right thing. We don't have guns in our house because I have a huge phobia of them. If anything like this ever happend to us, I'm sure I'd want one.
Good for her! If she hadn't done that, she would have been dead before the cops got there. It's amazing how long it can take the cops to get to your house when you call 911, even if you don't live in BFE.
Wow! Good for her! So sad she is going through what she is, but she is one strong young woman. That guy got what he deserved...thank God she and her infant son is okay.
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps... Mom to Carter (6), and Calianne (1). Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!
DH wants to get a gun and get us both trained in how to handle it properly, in case of a home invasion. I am on the fence and scared about it, but stories like this scare the crap out of me. These guys were taking advantage of her being a single mom with a small baby. What if something happened to my H and I was left with just Lily and myself? I'd want to know how to defend us against a home invasion.
do it. i seriously have no qualms about being left home alone with the girls because we have several handguns, shotguns & rifles & i know how to use them all.
the husband hunts so that why we have so many- but damn i feel safe in my house!

My dad always tells people that they should be 100% positive that they could shoot to kill before they go out and bring a weapon into their home. Because if you can't do it you better believe the d!ckwad breaking into your house can.
I would have done the same thing that she did. And then I would have thought, "What if the other guy comes after me and DS later because I killed his buddy?" The poor girl ... to have gone through so much in her short 18 years, then deal with this. And WHY did it take the cops so long to get to her house!!!

I'm in the same boat as you. I have fired a gun before and it is fun. My biggest fear is kids potentially getting to the gun. There is no way this would happen in our house because we would take steps to lock it up ( In a safe) and teach our kids when they are old enough the dangers of them. I also worry about my kids going to play at a friend's house who's parents own a gun. Do they lock up there guns? I guess that would be something to ask beforehand. Guns are scare me, but people scare me more.

Pretty sure she lives in the sticks.
You guys should have seen the interveiw of this girl. She is a tiny little thing and looks relatively unphased by all she has been through. The interview I saw the police said that the intruder had been stalking her for a while.
Guns scare the poop out of me, mainly because I don't know how to use one. I can definitely see why they would be useful in such a situation, but I still don't know if I could own a gun. The culture around guns is a little different up here, perhaps that is why they make me nervous.

I'm the same way. I think it's commendable what she did, but I would never ever do the same in her situation. I won't own a gun.
What would you have done? What would have happened to her if she didn't own a gun? The headline of the story could have read very differently ...
Its important to not have a phobia over something that could one day save your life. ...I did too, until my husband introduced me to them and put me through the proper courses on how to properly carry and shoot.
We are going to take more classes so that if necessary, I can defend myself when being attacked out of no where.
That is terrible what happened to her, but amazing that she defended herself and her son. ...AND she was smart enough to get 911 on the phone so it is documented that they were breaking in before she shot.

I think going through the courses and training before you "need" them is ideal. If anything happens to your H, you may just be focusing on WHY you are taking the course(s). and just because you get the training, doesn't mean you have to own a gun. but if you get attacked and are able to get the gun from the intruder, you should know how to use it properly so you don't hurt yourself and you aren't scared of the gun itself.
Exactly! I already know the gun laws in my state, wouldn't even ask permission before I shot the stupid idiot who tried coming at my kids with a knife. Don't mess with a mama bear! Good for this girl! A shot gun is pretty bad ass

DH doesn't want a gun in the house. Shitt like this is why I do want one. Based on an episode of either SVU or Judging Amy I think, where the lawyer was anti guns in the home, but had to argue her client's right to keep one (I think one kid committed suicide or something) because she counted off how long it takes for someone to break in to the house and find the homeowner and a child hiding in a closet.

this. i am a big supporter of the 2nd amendment but i could not shoot a person. i have wanted to take a class so i'd know what to do with a gun in case i ever happen on one (how to check the chamber/magazine/safety, how to fire etc), but i'm pretty sure any gun i had would just be taken away from me while i tried to make myself shoot.

How very sad that she had to deal with the death of her husband and then this dillhole tries to attack her. I would have been terrified.
