LO waking earlier and earlier...?

Just read the post about wake up times. I used to be able to say that LO slept 7-7, but that hasn't happened in a few months. He seems to be getting up earlier and earlier. For example, today he woke at 5:05am. Ah! We've played with bedtimes, but nothing works. I'll b-feed him and he typically goes back to sleep (unless he takes a big D while trying to go back to sleep which has been the case recently) until around 6:30am or so... I guess my question is this - if your LO wakes up before you want them to, do you just not feed them and try and soothe them back to sleep? Really not thinking that would work... Maybe once I'm not b-feeding anymore? Help!

Re: LO waking earlier and earlier...?

  • Neither of my kiddos would go back down without the boob. If I tried to hold off on nursing during a night waking they would FLIP!
Now that DS has weaned (10 months) I can get him to go back to sleep with some snuggles and the paci. (he sleeps 7:30- 7 ish)
DD did not drop night feedings until 15 months (she was, and still is, a bit spoiled...) Tongue Tied

That's what I was afraid of... Thanks.
  • I would always treat it like any other night waking, so if you typically nurse to sleep I'd continue to do that.  I feel like any change in the routine would signal that it's time to wake up for the day.

You could also try something like the OK to Wake Clock. The color of it's face changes when it's alright to wake up for the day.

  • I'm probably the worst person to answer since we've just powered through it (and still going). But the 4-5am waking was the very last feeding to go for all 3 of my boys. My #1 figured out sleeping to a reasonable time was a good thing, but my #2 and #3 did/do the painful early wake ups. We never did the ok to wake clock bc honestly they would laugh at it and throw it across the room. We've tried snuggling, paci, etc etc and all I can say is it did pass. Hopefully your guy will figure out sleeping is gooood. :)
  • DS did that around your DS's age, too.  He went from 7 to 6 to 5 to 4:30.  It was hideous.  I finally saw the light and realized I needed to treat any waking before 6:00am like a night waking, which at that point (for us), meant CIO.  I think we had to let him cry for all of 2 mornings before he started sleeping a bit later.  He was still an early bird, but 6:00 or 6:30 was FAR better than anything starting with a 4 or 5.

We do the same thing, and it hasn't worked as well for us, but neither G or I are willing to get up at 4:45 every morning before work.  So, for example, this morning, G just went in at intervals until 6am when I got up with her.

Since we've been doing this for months, I think I am going to give her a nightlight and put a sippy with water in her crib.  She already has a blanket, a stuffed toy and a book, but it's totally dark so she can't see those things.  After I get the night light in there I am just not going to go in there until 6.  Wish me luck.

  • Thanks all. We did CIO to get him to sleep through the night, but I'm afraid I've gotten him used to eating "breakfast" early now... SIGH. This morning was 5:08am, but he had also taken a big d.
