Do you follow the "productive fever" rule?

Luke has been running a low fever (100-100.4) since about 10 last night.  It's jumped up to 101 this morning.  According to the pedi's website 100-102 is considered a "productive fever" and shouldn't be treated with meds unless the child isn't comfortable.  Do you follow this rule?  Luke seems content enough, just a bit tired, so I'm not sure what to do.  Part of me feels like a horrible mother for not giving him something to bring the temperature down, but I also want him to kick this bug and if letting his "productive fever" continue is the way to do it then maybe I should.  Help!

  • We do unless it really inhibits them trying to sleep. If they're otherwise behaving fine, I don't give meds. Molly will usually play generally as normal during the day with a fever of up 101. However, she sleeps much better if I give her Tylenol for the fever over night.

  • Yes, I only medicate if it gets really high. Sorry he's sick :(

  • Yep. Higher than 101, I kind of judge by how she's feeling, acting, etc. Higher than 102, I give meds.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • I don't usually dose L unless he's over 102.  Otherwise, he turns into a wild and crazy man and will not slow down/rest because he thinks he's all better.  ;)  I hope you all feel better soon!!

  • Thanks ladies!  Just making sure I was doing the right thing.  Luke rarely has fevers so I feel like a newb every time he gets one.

    Same here.

Ditto this.  Except we use motrin (for DS1, not 2, obvs) because Tylenol doesn't really do anything for him (he must take after me in that regard!).  Hope he gets to feeling better soon!
