crap naps at daycare?

My son likes to nap in his crib on his belly. He will take 2 hr naps at home. However, at daycare his naps SUCK. I get that there are other kiddos there and its loud and bright. Today he was there 5 hours and took only one 20 minute nap. He is so off and passes out when he gets home at like 6pm!! His typically bedtime is 7 or 7:30pm. I have told them that when he gets whiney he's tired & to put him down. I think they are totally missing his cues!! Anyone else have this issue??

Re: crap naps at daycare?

  • Yes. It's not the DCP's fault...there is just a lot going on and DS doesn't want to miss anything! Of course, he only takes 40 minute naps at home, so daycare's not really different. He goes to bed at 6:30.

  • My DD was having really crap naps at daycare as well for a few weeks.  This was also when she was sleeping like crap at home.  For the past few days her naps have gotten much better.  Has you LO always taken crap naps at DC or is this something new?

  • My DS is doing this, it stinks.  He's been in Daycare for about 6 weeks now and won't sleep much at all.  Then when he gets home he wants to nap for 2+ hrs because he's exhausted.  Yet, when he's at home with us he takes a morning nap and a afternoon nap..  Keep trying to tell myself more time will fix it, but i don't know :'/

  • He only started daycare 3 weeks ago - and they have sucked the whole time

  • Maybe since it's only been going 3 weeks he's still adjusting.  Will the DC put him on his belly to sleep?  I know ours won't without a doctors note.  I think he'll eventually adjust and start sleeping better.  It might just be a longer adjustment for him.  We consider it a good day if my daughter take more than 2 naps for at least 30 minutes at DC.  Some days she doesn't nap at all, but she naps great (usually) at home.

  • I could have written this post myself. We are having the very same problem. My husband and I were both off for 2 weeks during the holidays and we worked endlessly to get him on a nap schedule. On Monday at home, he napped for 2 hours in the morning, and hour at midday, and then another hour in the afternoon with a 6:30 pm bedtime. It was a big milestone for us! Then, he started back at daycare and despite my note about his new schedule and how he should not be up for more than 2 hours, they will not put the child down for a nap. One time, he was up for 5 hours straight. I was livid.

I get that there are other kids, and it is bright and loud, but it isn't healthy. I am going to visit another place this week that apparently has a separate room for sleeping in hopes that all our hard work is not ruined by daycare.

  • DS naps awesome at home on the weekends. I t's like clockwork from 9 - 10:30 and 12:30 - 2, but at daycare he only gets 2 <1 hour naps, and they're at random times. I wish he would sleep better there, but I think there's just too much excitement. He still sleeps great at night, so I've just decided to roll with it.
  • We have the same problem at our daycare (keeping DD up too long and then she takes super short naps).   We had the same problem with DD1 at the same daycare.  I worried about it endlessly and naps finally did improve when she was about 15 months old (and moved to the toddler room where everyone naps at the same time!).

I'm sorry, I wish I had advice for you, but I've given up on hoping for good daycare naps, I just don't think it's possible for some babies to ever get good ones while they are in a room with other kids and the daycare providers can't watch for their cues!
