Hi moms,
I had severe preeclampsia and was told I should go back to my MFM before getting pregnant again. My OB said that if I get it again it could happen even earlier, I started at around 28 weeks this time. If you tried for a second baby and saw a MFM or high risk OB, what did they suggest you do? I'm under the impression that it can't be prevented. The plan was always for us to start trying again in November but after my experience with my daughter we are a bit gun shy. Thanks for any info you might have.
Re: If you had preeclampsia...
I also had pre-e and delivered at 31w2d, with symptoms starting at 28 weeks. The only thing my doctor said I could do to potentially decrease the likelihood of pre-e happening again was to lose weight before getting pregnant again, but that would in no way guarantee I wouldn't get it again as people of all shapes and sizes get pre-e. My doctor also has said that when I get pregnant again, she will want to put me on some medicine, I believe it is a high dose of asprin? to reduce the chances of getting pre-e again.
my regular ob told me pre-e is not too uncommon in first time moms and usually doesn't occur again in subsequent pg (not sure I totally believe him on that point). He said I didn't need to see a mfm for my other pg he would just watch me more closely. Well before we got pg w/ #2 I was dx w/ an autoimmune disease which meant I would need to see an mfm.
For me my pre-e started later w/ each pg and less severe each time also. I also know ladies who have had the opposite. Sometimes they can figure out what caused it. In my case it was most likely a combo of my autoimmune disease and a blood clotting problem cause problems. My third pg I was on blood thinners which seemed to help out but not eliminate the problem.
Bottom line ask questions, lots of questions. If you don't feel comfortable w/ the answers you're getting get a second opinion. Make a plan for how things will be handled should you develop pre-e again.
