Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Anyone introduce meat early?

Tonight I introduced chicken pur?ed with breastmilk and sweet potatoes to my six and a half month old. She started solids at five and a half months, but was doing great munching her food ... So I thought I would give it a try for the iron and protein factor. She ate it just fine, but at the back of my mind I wonder if it seems a little early for meat. I'm so used to seeing babies eating just fruits and veggies. Did anyone else choose to introduce protein early and when?

  • I don't have advice, but am also very interested in the responses. Our pedi told us we needed to start meats now (DD just turned 6 months), and I thought it was quite early to be telling us that she needed to start.  Of course, I don't know for sure, but I'd think that as long as your DD is tolerating it well, go for it!

  • We tried it that early and DS hated it. Our pedi said it was fine to start at 6 months, but not to be surprised if he didn't like it.

I should ETA ... My daughter hated the first bite. She made a face like she thought it was absolutely disgusting and was begging to chase the taste out of her mouth with water out of her sippy cup (a first). I cut the mixture with more sweet potato and she got more used to it as we went along with the feeding... But this was definitely not baby's new favorite by any means!

It is all trial and error. He never took to homemade meat purees, but loves the jars. Now we don't do it in a puree and he is a total carnivore and loves to eat pieces of meat. Parents typically start with veggies bc kids like them. And meat can be an acquired taste. But according to my oedi, if your LO likes meats, you are fine to feed them.

  • I introduced meat between 5 1/2 - 6 months. She never liked the plain jar meats but likes the meals with meat.
  • I tried giving DD a piece of chicken off what i was eating (very tiny) and she loved it, She seems to love everything new i give her if its not pureed. If it is pureed she gives me dirty looks.

  • We started meat at 7 months when DD was eating finger food. The thought of pureeing it grossed me out. (We started solids at 5 months)

  • We've already given him the puree chicken with sweet potatoes (Earth's Best, I think) and he loves it. Hated the beef with mixed veggies though.

  • I made D a turkey meatloaf (with lots of zuccini and carrots). We ate about half and I pureed the rest for him. It took several meals of one taste before he really got interested in eating it. And when I mixed it with sweet potatoes, it became a winner.

Key takeaways for me: patience and sweet potatoes!

  • We are just starting BLW and DS had ham yesterday for the first time and he loved it!

  • We started meats with Chloe at about 6 1/2 months.  She has loved everything, her favorite was the BBQ ribs we had at Christmas (we do BLW, she's only had a few pureed meats, she was fine with those but she prefers to feed herself).

Hannah is 7 months and I gave her chicken for the first time today. I cut it up into Trent tiny chunks and mixed it with applesauce. She chowed it down and screamed for more.

  • We haven't introduced it yet, but we will before 8 months. We use wholesome baby food's site for when to start different foods. We're doing all the fruits and vegetables for the 6-8 month category before we do meats. DH doesn't want to puree it, and he's scared to give him until he is more used to table food.
