Re: Breastmilk storage bags

  • The Honeysuckle bags are great!! It's a small business that makes a great, biodegradable, BPA free bag. They are very cost effective as well and they make a baby food bag, if you end up needing that later.

  • I have the bpa free medela bags, but I'm really considering just getting a mini freezer for my breastmilk and using glass bottles (not enough room in my normal freezer for glass bottles.)
  • It's been a few years since I've had babies but just wanted to mention that my obyn had a concern with the storage bags, as the fat of the milk would stick to the sides.  She suggested bottles for storage.  Not sure if that's still true with the newer bags.
  • We mostly froze in ice cube trays then transferred to large storage containers.

  • I used and will use again, FreshBaby covered ice cube trays (amazon or BRU). I would pump into a bottle, pour it in the freezer trays and freeze. Then every day I would empty the cubes into a large plastic freezer bag (1quart size). I'd combine 1-2 days into a freezer bag and write the date on the bag depending on how much I pumped. We'd take cubes out as needed and thaw overnight in the fridge in a bottle. This is one thing I liked about Avent bottles - the opening is wide enough to fit a frozen cube into.

I felt the milk bags were wasteful and the cost really adds up. I used them occasionally when I traveled for work, but I was always worried about them leaking.

run them under warm water for thirty sec, voila! no more sticking. :-)

Ice cube trays are a genius idea.  And to think all the cash I've spent and bags I've used over the past year+ of nursing DS.  Hmmmm....
