Connor as nn for Conrad?

Conrad is a family name that I had always dismissed out of hand as too weird.  DH suggested using Connor as a nickname.  I don't think that's a traditional nn of Conrad, but then its not like Conrad is a traditional  name to begin with.  What do you think?  Is it ok inventing a nickname? Is Conrad just too weird regardless?  TIA.

Re: Connor as nn for Conrad?

  • Maybe I'm being thick, but how is Conrad not a traditional name? It's a very, very, very old Germanic name, and to me, having a long history is exactly what makes a name 'traditional'. Connor/Conor is a traditional Irish name, so you're right, it is not related to Conrad at all.

  • I like Conrad!  I wouldn't use Connor as nn for Conrad, I just don't get the point.

  • Honestly, I considered Conrad if DD was a boy but I know an adult Conrad who always goes by "Con" which I personally think is very negative. I do think that Connor is a big stretch as a NN for Conrad, but I would rather start calling him Connor than him end up being Con.

  • It's too much of a stretch. One is not a diminuative of the other.

Conrad is very, very tradtional, to the point it's REALLY old school. If you like it that's fine, there's nothing with it. It's just too traditional for me and I say that about very few names.

Connor is also traditional but a bit more edgy IMO. It's also a good choice.

It doesn't make a good nickname for Conrad but if you're trying to honor someone, it could pass as a spinoff name/updated version just fine.

  • Conrad is a legit name.

Connor is also a real name, completely separate from Conrad, however.

This. Mind you, I suppose it's the same thing when people named John go by the name Jack. Doesn't make sense to me, but it happens, I guess.

  • I agree with PPs, I don't see Connor as a NN for Conrad at all.  I really like Conrad--I think Connor is overused right now (though is a perfectly good name).  Conrad is a very traditional name and much less popular.

Would you have given Connor a NN?  If not, I don't see why Conrad needs one.

  • Both legitimate names in their own right, I can't see them as interchangeable.  I don't think Conrad is weird at all, in fact I really like it and would totally use it over Connor which is just okay in my opinion and is becoming a bit overused.

Ditto.  It would be like calling a girl named Melissa "Maggie" as a nn.  It makes no sense.

This.  I would use one or the other.

  • Conrad and Connor are two completely different names. My younger son is named Conrad and although people sometimes mistake it for Connor, we always correct them. We have been asked if we ever call him Connor but You are not saving letters or syllables while substituting one for the other and obviously I chose the name I prefer. If you still want to honor the family name, simply use Connor.

  • I asked for opinions on Conrad a few days ago and only got good feedback.  I think it's a great name with no need for a nickname.
