Anyone else's LO sleep with a white noise machine?

My LO does not require one. We didn't use one until 2 months ago (she was 21 months old) when we moved from our quiet condo to a squeaky, old house we are renting. While we love the house, we are fearful that any step might wake her. Therefore we started using a white noise machine at night. (I do not use it during naps as I am the only one home with her and can be fairly quiet. She also does not need it when we travel to the grandparents.)

I am fearful of her becoming addicted to needing the noise to sleep, so I would like to wean her/us off of it. (Mostly because my MIL used this with all of her kids and my H is the only one who doesn't need to sleep with it as an adult!) Suggestions to help her stay asleep when we get up before her?

I have heard of a fan, but would rather not run a fan in her room in January. I have also heard of using the machine outside of her room versus in. Anyone tried this?

Thanks so much!

  • We still use one.  She doesn't use it at daycare though.  We have a dog so at any given time he may bark, anything set him off even a doorbell on tv!

She can fall asleep without it.  But after nearly 2 years it's a definite signal it's time for bed.  You turn it on and the lights off and she's instantly in sleep mode.

  • We have used one since he was born, but he naps at daycare without it and has slept without it when he does overnights at his grandparents house. I never really thought about him being dependent on it.

  • We just started using one recently. I am not really worried about it...I think I am addicted to hearing it through the monitor now too!

This.  Plus, My husband and I also sleep with white noise (usually a fan).  I don't necessarily think of it as an issue.

  • I have never used one and probably never will. I would just stop using it and let her get used to the noise. After a while, she will be able to sleep through anything.

We rent our basement as an apartment and sometimes the tenants can be noisy and DD has always slept through everything and her room is above their living room! I still can't believe how much noise they can make and that it never wakes her up!

  • We still use one every single night and at nap times when we are home.  I like how it drowns out the other noise in the house...we have 2 dogs so it can get a little loud.  He naps fine w/o it at the sitters though.  I don't see us changing it at hime any time soon.  If it works for him...than it works for us.

  • I've used one with all of my kids, and around 2/3 (when they moved into toddler beds) they would get up and turn it off themselves for fun, and that turned into sleeping without one. To me getting consistent sleep is what's important, and if that means a sound machine so be it.  If you want to stop using the machine now, I'd say turn the volume down a little each day until you can just turn it off, your LO should adjust to the noises of the house.

  • We have always used music or beach sounds with our kids. I would rather them sleep than have to tip toe around and freak out when the door bell or phone rings. I am a very light sleeper, especially since having kids, every little snore or movement would wake me up, so we use it now too. What are you going to do when your #2 gets here? Say "shhh #1 is sleeping!" ;-) my kids dont have to have the noise but they sleep better with in on because it is constant. Sleeping in complete silence isn't natural so any sound interrupting that silence will lead to a wake up for most people. I have an app on my phone to use when we travel, not because they won't sleep with out it, but it guarantees that they stay a sleep through odd new noises and I don't have to constantly stress that someone will wake them up.

  • He sleeps with a sound machine on rain and a fan on low in the hallway. Our house is also super noisy/squeaky and our dogs are loud which is how we started using them. He has slept fine without it when we've lost power and whatnot but for me it's not a big deal that he uses it so I haven't persued weaning him from it.

I am addicted to it over the monitor, too!  That's funny.  I've been using a white noise machine or a fan ever since DD was born, but she can fall asleep without it.  There have been too many times when outdoor noise or even our dog wakes her up, so I don't risk it anymore!  Good luck.

  • We never had a white noise machince, but DDs mobile has ocean sounds. The mobile arm was removable do we took that off ages ago and left the main piece. Its now hooked to her twin bed and she turns it on every night as she climbs into bed. (My favorite part is that I've NEVER replaced the batteries in this thing!)

This is us exactly, minus the dog. DD sleeps anywhere pretty easily, but we do use the sound machine for every nap and night time at home.

  • We use a fan in our room and DD has had a noise machine since she was a few months old.  We're probably all dependent on them, but really, who cares? So we have to bring one if we travel, they're pretty small.  Having to use a white noise machine for the rest of her life is not going to scar her.

And to answer your question, at least for us, our little table fan is louder than the machine gets, so I wouldn't use that to wean her off.

  • we use white noise. Our sleep doula coached us to train them to use the white noise like a clock. If they wake up and hear the noise it is a signal to go back to sleep, once we go in and turn it off they can be awake.  It isn't 100% but works pretty good.

To be honest I was pretty sleep deprived with two non sleepers so I kind of feel like we will work it out later.  Its not really any different than liking a certain blankie or stuff animal. They will eventually out grow it.
