Moms that introduced WCM before 12 mos, pls come in

I think a couple of you mentioned giving LO small amounts of WCM before 12 months, with pedi's ok.  Can you share what you did and when?

DS is 10.5 months and eats all table foods really well.  We pack him real breakfasts, lunches, and snacks for DCP, and he eats what we eat for dinner.  On weekdays (at DCP) he only drinks about 10oz  of BM during the day, but always comes home with a little leftover milk (so pedi says this means he's drinking what he wants/enough), and we nurse 2-3x .  On weekends we nurse exclusively and I'd be fine to keep that up.

My supply has been dropping and so I've been using about 2-3 oz/day of my freezer stash to supplement what I pump. I think I can keep this up until 11 months (maybe 11.5) before my stash runs out, and I'm wondering if I can just introduce WCM at that point?

It just seems silly to introduce such a small amount of formula for only a couple weeks until his 1st bday, and then introduce WCM.  Plus, we're talking 2-3 oz a day, maybe 4oz max.

What do you think??

ETA: FWIW - we've also given him lots of yogurt, cheese, and other dairy products and he's been completely fine with them - there really isn't any food so far that hasn't agreed with his digestive system.

  • I say go for the WCM.  I went back to work full time when DD#1 was 10.5 mths old--I had exclusively BF until then...and she would not take a bottle.  In the 2-3 weeks before I went back to work, I started replacing day time nursings with WCM and by the time I started work, she did WCM during the day and BM when she was home in the evenings and on weekends.  She had no problems switching and she continued to nurse, fully weaning around 18 mths.  With DD#2, I started the transition to WCM at around 11 months, mainly because pumping at work was just getting really old and at almost 24 months, she still nurses before bed.  DD#2 didn't like CM at first, but after the first week, she got used to it.

I think when you are this close to a year, unless there are allergies or other sensitivities to deal with, it's easier and just fine for the LO to transition to WCM and I agree that it's silly to go through 2 transitions--one to formula and one to WCM in such a short time span.

  • Thanks - everything I've read that goes into any detail on introducing WCM before 12 months seems to focus on not giving it to young infants and not using WCM as a replacement for BM, which I'm not really doing.  I'd ask DCP to go through all the BM first, and give WCM only if DS finishes the BM.

  • try mixing it w/ BM, slowly increasing the ratio of WCM to BM to get him used to the taste

  • Thanks! I think he might actually like the taste - he is a really adventurous eater!  I was just trying to be cautious about introducing it it too early.

  • We switched at 10.5 mo slowly.  I switched jobs, my supply was tanking, and so she was drinking more formula anyway.  Up until then we had no allergies, so I ran it by the pedi and he said we could go for it.

I gave her two ounces mixed with formula three times a week, then once a day for a week.  After those three weeks, we went to 4oz : 4 oz for week, then 6 to 2 for a week, and then one bottle of whole milk and three formula each day for a week--mixing up which one was the whole milk.  Finally, the week before her 1 yr bday we were all whole milk.  We were planning a trip over her birthday so I didn't want to have to pull around the formula and breast pump if I didn't have to.

I never mixed milk with bm because I didn't want to throw out any bm that took me so long to pump.  Oddly enough she self-weaned the day before she turned one.

  • I'd say go for it.  I don't see the point of doing formula for 2 weeks or so when you'll be introducing WCM shortly after.  Maybe do what sofka say starting around 11 months so its an easier transition and you'll be able to notice any changes in his system (if anything is going to happen).
