talk to me about daybeds

So, as we are getting ready to start working on the nursery, we are trying to figure out if we should do away with the office or guest bedroom.  I started thinking maybe we could combine the two if we swapped the queen guest bed for a daybed.

Do any of you use a daybed in your guest bedroom?  Any recs for one that is actually comfy and looks nice?  If I get a trundle with it, can 2 people sleep comfortably on it?  And this is a dumb question, but if 2 people are sleeping on it, do they lay vertically over both mattresses, or each lays on their own mattress? (hope that question made sense).

Re: talk to me about daybeds

  • I had a day bed growing up that was a trundle. Each mattress was a twin. Two twins = a king. Tons of people swear two fulls or two queens is a king but nope. I worked in the hotel industry long enough to know.

Its the most comfortable for each person just to sleep on their own mattress. Otherwise you have a weird slit right in your middle. Not comfy that way.

  • I don't have a daybed in my guest bedroom, but that's a good idea.  I had one in my bedroom growing up, and from what I remember, the trundle part was lower than the main matress, so two people couldn't lay vertically on both, but each person could lay horizontally on both, at different levels, if that makes sense.

  • you can get a strappy thing to make it comfy to sleep with the beds together:

  • My mom has a daybed in her guest bedroom.  Always has, actually.  When guests come over, she just pulls up the trundle and voila, more bed space.  Yep, 2 people can sleep comfortably (adults-wise) or if you're 9 and having a sleepover, about 4 or 5 giggly girls can sleep comfortably.  ;)

When I spend the night at my mom's with the boys (when Jay goes out of town), the boys and I all fit in the one twin bed easily too (this is when they get all cranky and I pull them into bed with me to shut them up).

  • Ditto the others - you can easily sleep 2 people if you use a trundle.  When I was growing up we just treated them like 2 twins so each person slept on their own mattress right next to each other.

And as for the comfort level...it all depends on the mattresses you use.  You'll probably have to get a "cheaper" one (non-pillow top) so the trundle can fit under the bed, but just get the most comfortable one you can.  And/or just plan to add a mattress pad when you actually make up the bed for guests.
